Hijacking attempt on Malaysia plane bound for Kuala Lumpur, Jetblue makes emergency landing because of a laptop battery on fire

– reports are still coming in but a Malaysia Airlines planes was apparently involved in a hijacking attempt just outside Melbourne

Witnesses described how the man, carrying an object, went towards the front of the plane shortly after it took off at 11:11pm.

He was tackled by passengers who overpowered him and tied him up with belts.

Former AFL player Andrew Leoncelli told the ABC he was near the front of the plane and saw a man carrying a big object go towards the cockpit and become really agitated, saying “I’m going to f***ing blow the plane up”.

No injuries or damage to the aircraft were reported, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro. The plane landed safely at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids at 8:10 p.m. Tuesday and left later for San Francisco. Firefighters responded as a precaution, but the airport said the fire was out by the time the plane landed.
