Getting to write an Ascott Waterplace Surabaya Review was a bit of an accident. Ascott is a mystery brand to me. Brands like Somerset Serviced Residences and Citadines Apart’Hotel belong to it. Their loyalty program Ascott Online Advantage was just launched in 2015.
My only other stay with the chain was at the Somerset Suites Chengdu (Review).
The chain usually specializes in properties that are outside the hip areas of a town and focus more long term stays. Many of their properties tend to be on the outskirts of a city (but that’s not necessarily so). Ascott Waterplace Surabaya is about 4 miles outside the city center to the west as part of a new development.
I had actually booked a AirBnB in the same development (before my AirBnb fraud case in Fortaleza). I went to my AirBnB apartment first but while the apartment had no safety issues it was just dirty and badly equipped. The host graciously offered a full refund and I walked over to the Ascott Waterplace Surabaya.
Check-In was exceptionally friendly (that is hard to do in friendly Indonesia) and in fluent English. The lobby area is just beautiful and looks more like a living room.
My suite was enormous and top of the line finishing – this would do well in a Park Hyatt! Dark colors, lost of space and high quality equipment. It does not get much better than that in a Park Hyatt or Andaz. The AC worked tirelessly (even without that annoying key card thing) and the Internet was working rather fast at 3 Mbit.
The Ascott has its own gym and pool but you can also access the community pools at the Waterplace development. They are huge and surprisingly empty.
The suite is the size of an apartment and is fully equipped including a kitchen and washer/ dryer. It’s like a one bedroom apartment and one can stay much longer there.
The breakfast in the morning is terrible though with just a few low quality options. The adjacent mall opens at 10 AM so you will be on your own for breakfast if you do not eat what’s provided.
In sum this is an excellent place if you don’t have to be in the Surabaya city center. The quality of the one-bedroom apartment is stunning. Breakfast is terrible though and the price of $75 too high for Surabaya.
