What is the Marriott Friends and Family Code?
The Marriott Friends and Family code itself is the three letters of MMF – which you can enter on the booking page where it asks for Special Rates & Awards.
The Marriott Friends and Family code is strictly to be used by employees to book their family and close friends a special discount rate at Marriott properties. The discount can be quite substantial, and some people have even reported discounts of up to 80%.
Who can use the Marriott Friends and Family Code?
Anyone can input the code into the website, to search for the rate, but you need a signed form (from a Marriott manager or from the HR department) or an employee ID at check-in to validate your booking.
I searched for a hotel in Orlando for the 5th of December for 1 night for 2 people. Using MMF, the Marriott Friends and Family code, it gave me a rate of $64, whereas the standard rate is $119, making it 46% cheaper.
So while the Marriott website will let you input the code MMF into the box and proceed with booking the rate it found for you, this brings a false sense of security, as it seems that 99.9% of the time, Marriott will stop you at the front desk when you check-in to ask you for proof of eligibility for using the code.
When I tried booking with Marriott by entering the code MMF, Marriott stated that valid corporate ID is required at check-in and some rates are only subject to availability. When checking room rates with the code, it was repeated that proof of eligibility will be required. Then again, when choosing a hotel from the list, it very clearly stated that the rate is Marriott Friends and Family and valid ID will be required. Marriott repeat this enough times that you know they are serious!
The Marriott Friends and Family code seems to be monitored closely by Marriott for signs of misuse and abuse.
Save yourself the embarrassment and book Marriott using a code that you're entitled to!
If you're lucky enough to have a friend or family member who's a Marriott employee, then ask nicely if they can book for you and get the required form. Otherwise, it's likely that you'll end up red-faced and charged the rack rate when you get to your hotel.
