The moment I stepped off the plane in Siem Reap, I could feel that I was somewhere special. The tropical air, the warm smiles of the locals, and the lush greenery told me I had arrived on sacred ground. This area of northern Cambodia is steeped in spirituality, with countless ancient temples dotting the landscape. While Angkor Wat is certainly the most famous, there are hundreds of lesser known ruins that hold just as much magic.

As a lifelong student of Buddhism and meditation, I was eager to visit these holy sites and connect more deeply with their energies. The temples of Angkor served as the epicenter of the ancient Khmer civilization and its distinctive brand of Buddhism. Though many are now in disrepair from the ravages of time and climate, their powerful auras remain.

My first stop was Ta Prohm, a temple famously left in a state of "controlled ruin" with gigantic tree roots snaking over the crumbling walls. I was awestruck wandering through its dimly lit corridors. The energy was palpable, as if the very stones were vibrating at a higher frequency. I sat in silent meditation amid the giant kapok trees, feeling waves of tranquility wash over me.
Later, I visited the lesser-known temple of Beng Mealea, even more overgrown than Ta Prohm. The area sees few tourists, and I was able to explore to my heart's content. Clambering over collapsed walls and into hidden nooks, each turn revealed some new treasure - a serene Buddha statue, an exquisite carving in the likeness of a temple dancer. The power of this place was undeniable, a sanctuary built for the gods.

In our fast-paced, distraction-filled world, the ability to cultivate stillness has become a lost art. Yet this ancient practice offers profound benefits for body, mind and spirit. As I discovered on my meditation retreat, reconnecting to stillness can be transformative.

Modern life pulls us in a thousand different directions, keeping us perpetually busy and restless. We flip from screen to screen, racing against the clock to cross ever more items off our endless to-do lists. Even when we try to rest, buzzing phones and pinging notifications prevent us from ever fully relaxing. Our minds remain trapped on the hamster wheel of constant motion.

In contrast, stillness is the radical act of simply being, without agenda or expectation. As Eckhart Tolle, renowned spiritual teacher, writes, “Stillness is the language God speaks, and everything else is a bad translation.” By sinking into stillness, we tap into new depths of wisdom, receiving insights not accessible through thinking alone.
On retreat, I devoted many hours to vipassana or “insight” meditation. This practice involves anchoring attention to the breath while noticing thoughts and sensations without attachment. At first, I struggled to slow my monkey mind, wanting to analyze everything arising in consciousness. But as I persisted, a profound stillness emerged.

No longer buffeted by compulsive thinking, I glimpsed the clear blue sky behind my mental clouds. As one teacher describes, “Stillness is not blankness. It is an alive Presence beyond compare.” In stillness, I touched this vibrant, living Presence that defied description. I understood viscerally why mystics describe stillness as the doorway to the Divine.

Beyond spiritual growth, studies confirm stillness also offers mental and physical renewal. Just ten minutes of meditation a day can boost focus, emotional resilience and immunity. With regular practice, the stress hormone cortisol drops while serotonin and endorphins rise. Stillness heals.
Though modern life conspires to keep us distracted, reclaiming stillness is possible for us all. We simply must make slowing down a priority. Turn off electronics, spend time in nature, take up yoga or meditation. Start small if needed – even one mindful breath can begin to defuse the urgency driving constant busyness.

The practice of noble silence may seem like a relic of the past, but its gifts are more relevant than ever in our noisy modern world. On retreat, I vowed to refrain from any unnecessary speech for multiple days. Though daunting at first, I quickly discovered the immense power of quieting my outer voice to amplify the inner one.

Turning off the external chatter opened up space to hear my own soul’s whispers. Without pressure to respond or react, my mind gradually settled like sediment in a glass of swirling water. Negativity, doubt, and other “mind viruses” lost their grip as my inner stillness deepened.

Studies confirm this mental clearing effect. One found that two minutes of silence reboots the brain as effectively as twenty minutes of relaxation. Blood flow increases to the hippocampus, responsible for learning and memory. Uncluttered by stimuli, new neural pathways spontaneously emerge. Nobel prize-winning author Hermann Hesse captures it poetically: “Within you there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time.”

Of course, noble silence is not merely quiet for quiet’s sake. It fosters mindfulness, enhancing awareness of thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations passing through the stream of consciousness. By observing this flow without judgment, we gain insight into the workings of our minds. With reflection, we may uncover pain buried for decades or realize how Stories we tell ourselves shape our realities.

Processing and integrating these discoveries is enriching but intense work. Silence generates space for it, especially in community with other spiritual seekers. Noble silence is a sanctuary where voiceless parts of ourselves can enter into wholeness.
For some, however, silence surfaces demons. Painful memories, grief, or trauma may arise when left unfilled by distractions. In these difficult spaces, the support of teachers and residents made continuing possible for me.

Cambodia boasts some of the most stunning and pristine natural landscapes on earth. While Angkor Wat and other historic sites draw many visitors, we should not overlook the natural treasures this country has to offer. Connecting with nature provided a powerful dimension to my meditation retreat, awakening my spirit in profound ways.
Wandering through Cambodia's lush jungles lined with soaring trees gave me a sense of timelessness. Gazing up at emerald canopies, I imagined the thousands of monks who had trod this same earth over the centuries. These quiet forests once served as temples themselves, sacred spaces for ritual and meditation. Tuning my senses to the orchestra of buzzing cicadas, bird song and rustling leaves, it was easy to understand why.

According to Buddha, "The forest is a special place. You can feel it when you walk into the shade of the trees, that you’re in a sanctified temple." Modern research confirms nature's healing effects on body and mind. One Stanford study found that walking through nature versus urban settings lowered rumination and anxiety by over 20 percent. Being in the presence of ancient trees or listening to birdsong naturally brings us into stillness.

Wandering mist-veiled Angkor archaeological parks, the solitude was haunting. Lichen-covered ruins emerged through the fog, transporting me to a long-forgotten era. These crumbling testaments to human ambition contrasted starkly with the timeless forest reclaiming the land. Moving through alternating zones of light and shadow, stillness and sound, I felt close to the natural rhythms my forebears knew so well.
Hiking to hilltop temples for sunrise, that immersion in natural splendor deepened further. Seeing the jungle awash in golden light, listening to monks chanting their morning puja, I experienced nature's majesty through every sense. Unlike staring at a screen, connecting with the elements engaged my spirit and attention on a whole new level.

Each hike grounded me further, helping me understand viscerally why nature worship permeates Khmer religious traditions. To ancient animists, everything from the feathered serpent and gnarled trees to water and wind were sacred manifestations. One stunning waterfall I visited still remains a place of pilgrimage today. Transcending dogma, these living temples initiate awakening.
