black ant on pink flower,

You've just arrived in Paris after a long flight, eager to explore the City of Lights. But before you rush out to see the Eiffel Tower, take a few minutes to thoroughly inspect your hotel room. This small precaution could save you from bringing home an unwanted souvenir – bed bugs.

Bed bugs have become increasingly common in hotels and homes worldwide. These sneaky pests are experts at hiding in crevices and can travel in suitcases to infest your own home. While bed bugs themselves aren't known to transmit disease, their bites can cause painful, itchy welts.

So how do you thoroughly inspect for bed bugs? First, pull back the sheets and check the mattress seams, headboard, and box spring for small dark spots, which could be bed bug excrement, or live bugs themselves. Use a flashlight to illuminate any hiding spots. Check where the mattress tags are attached, a favorite bed bug hot spot. Lift the mattress to inspect the box spring below. Bed bugs can even hide behind baseboard trim, so check any cracks in the walls near furniture or the bed.

Don't forget to check other furniture too. Pull out drawers from nightstands and look underneath, along the inner sides and bottom. Bed bugs can even hide behind framed pictures on the walls, so inspect the back of any wall hangings.

If you're staying in an apartment rental, be sure to check upholstered furniture like couches or chairs. Look under cushions and pull up any loose fabric. Check crevices and joints.

The bathroom can also be a problem area. Look behind the headboard if it's attached to the wall. Check where fixtures like the toilet and plumbing pipes meet the wall.

If you do find signs of bed bugs, request a new room immediately. And if the new room also shows signs of infestation, you may want to seek alternate accommodations altogether. Document any evidence with photos and let the hotel manager know of the issue—they may compensate you for the trouble.

Vigilance is key. Even if you don't see any obvious signs, be cautious about where you place your luggage and clothes. Use luggage racks rather than the floor or bed. Upon returning home, take precautions like vacuuming your suitcase to help prevent spreading any hitchhiking bugs into your own house.

After thoroughly inspecting your hotel room in Paris for signs of bed bugs, you'll want to take precautions to avoid picking up or spreading an infestation during your stay. One of the key things you can do is keep your luggage off the floor and bed.

Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers. They'll crawl into luggage left on the floor, hiding in any nooks and crannies. Then they can be transported back home with you, spreading the infestation. Even a single pregnant female could start a whole new colony. Not ideal!

So after inspecting your room, use the luggage racks or other furniture like chairs to keep bags off the floor. The same goes for backpacks, purses, or any bags you'll be carrying around the city—don't put them down on the floor or bed where bugs could crawl inside.

If you absolutely must use the floor to sort your things, lay down a plastic garbage bag first to create a barrier between your stuff and any potential bed bugs. Still, the luggage rack is safest.

Even if you don't see signs of bugs in your Paris hotel, it's smart to keep bags off the floor as a preventative measure. Bed bugs are masters of hiding. Just because you don't spot any doesn't mean they aren't lurking out of sight, awaiting a warm body and suitcase to infest. Play it safe.

Besides luggage, also keep coats, clothes, and other fabrics off the bed. Bed bugs can cling to garments and then transfer to furniture. After wearing clothes out around Paris for sightseeing, don't just toss them onto the bed—contain them in your suitcase or a plastic bag.

When settling in for the night, double check your luggage is safely on a rack or chair, sealed tightly shut. Even while you sleep, bed bugs could be crawling out to investigate your belongings. Keep bags zipped up and off the floor.

If you wake up with mysterious itchy welts—a telltale sign of bed bugs—then immediately check your luggage inside and out for any hitchhiking pests. Look in seams, wheel wells, pockets—every nook and cranny. Finding just one bug means you may have brought back an infestation.

Don't wait until returning home either; inspect daily while traveling to try catching any problems early. Bed bugs multiply quickly, so spotting just a couple bugs in your suitcase could prevent a massive headache later. Always be vigilant.

black ant on pink flower,

Don’t just eyeball the mattress and assume it’s bug-free. You need to thoroughly inspect the entire sleeping surface to detect sneaky bed bugs. Remove all pillows, sheets, and blankets so you can see the mattress clearly. Use a flashlight to illuminate every crevice. Check along each seam where the mattress edges meet, rip open the mattress tag flaps at the corners, and peel up the fabric underside if possible. The seams and tags are favorite hiding spots for bed bugs – don’t skip them.

Flip the mattress over to inspect the underside, as bugs can cling to the fabric here too. Run your fingers along each seam and fold to feel for bumps. Keep an eye out for small dark stains, which could indicate bed bug excrement. If there are any cracks or holes in the mattress fabric, poke around inside using a flashlight. Bed bugs love cozy cracks.

Pay special attention to any buttons or touches of embellishment on a mattress. The areas around decorative buttons are prime real estate for bed bugs. Carefully inspect each one using a flashlight and fingertip. Even glance under any decorative mattress embroidery for good measure.

Use the same diligence when inspecting the box spring below the mattress. Lift the thin outer covering to view inside – bed bugs adore the wooden slats and undersides here. Shine a flashlight along every fold and crevice. Look for the telltale dark spots of bed bug excrement too.

Bed bugs have even been known to tuck themselves inside the piping along mattress edges. Take a moment to press along the piping, feeling for any bumps. Keep a close eye on threadbare sections where bugs may crawl inside. Mattress piping makes a cozy bed bug highway.

Don’t forget to also flip pillows over and inspect the undersides and seams. Pillowcases don’t offer full protection. Carefully look under the pillow shams as well. Then pull back blankets and sheets to inspect every stitch and fold. Check the underside of covered mattress pads too. Even a simple folded blanket can harbor a sneaky bed bug or two.

If any bedding has rips, tears, or holes, poke around inside using a flashlight. Bed bugs love tunneling into dark fabric holes. When checking decorative quilts or duvets, pay close attention to the embroidered sections and any folded pleats or ties.

Fabric headboards provide plenty of opportunities for bugs to hide as well. Remove the headboard if possible to check the back thoroughly – especially around screw holes and any textured details. The space between the mattress and headboard can also be a problem area. Shine a light in any crevices.

Don't Let the Bedbugs Bite: How to Avoid Bringing Home Unwanted Souvenirs from Your Paris Vacation - Pack Plastic Bags for Dirty Laundry

black ant on pink flower,

After adventuring around the streets of Paris all day, your clothes are bound to get dirty—especially if you opted for comfort over style and wore your trusted sneakers for all that walking. While it may seem easiest to just toss your dirty clothes in your suitcase and be done with it, this poses a bed bug risk you can't ignore. Make sure to pack plastic bags to separately contain any laundry that needs washing.

Bed bugs can cling to clothing fibers and hide in fabric creases and folds. If you dump dirty clothes in with the clean, any bugs could then transfer to the unsoiled items during transit in your luggage. Next thing you know, your whole suitcase is contaminated with bed bugs!

To prevent this nightmare scenario, pack plastic bags specifically for separating dirty laundry on your Paris trip. Look for bags that fully seal with zipper enclosures, rather than just basic tie handles. This prevents bed bugs from crawling out through tiny openings. Trash compactor bags are a smart choice for an extra thick plastic barrier.

Designate certain plastic bags just for dirty socks and underwear. Use another for shirts and bottoms. Dirty shoes should also each get their own sealed bag. Separating laundry into type-specific bags helps isolate any bugs.

I also recommend packing a spare outfit in a sealed plastic bag that you only open once home. If all your worn clothes become contaminated, you'll have one change of clean clothes for the trip home without needing to buy all new stuff.

While out sightseeing, make a habit of undressing over the plastic bags you packed. Don't just peel off sweaty socks over the hotel's rug—that's an open invitation for bed bugs to crawl away into the room. Place your dirty clothes directly into their designated bags. Flip shirts and pants inside-out first to dislodge any bugs. For bags housing shoes, sprinkle a bit of baby powder inside before sealing. The powder's fine texture both kills and deters bed bugs.

To save space, you can use vacuum compression bags for clothing. But make sure to seal the valve opening with tape after compressing the air out. Bed bugs are tiny enough to squeeze through valve slits.

Upon returning home, immediately put those sealed bags of dirty laundry from your Paris vacation into hot cycles in the washer and dryer. Wash in the hottest water possible, then dry thoroughly on high heat. The one-two punch of hot water and hot air kills bed bugs and their eggs on contact.

Finally, toss the now empty plastic bags in an outdoor trash can. You don't want any remnants hanging around inside where new bugs could crawl out. Bed bug prevention requires diligence!

Don't Let the Bedbugs Bite: How to Avoid Bringing Home Unwanted Souvenirs from Your Paris Vacation - Vacuum Suitcases When You Get Home

After lugging your suitcase all around the City of Lights during your Paris vacation, it's time for that trusty piece of luggage to get some TLC upon returning home. Make vacuuming your suitcase the very first order of business—it just might nip a bed bug infestation in the bud.

You already carefully inspected your hotel room and took precautions like sealing away dirty laundry. But bed bugs are crafty hitchhikers, so there's always a chance one or two still snuck into your stuff. If they crawled deep into the lining of your suitcase, you may have unwittingly transported them back home with you.

That's why firing up the vacuum before unpacking your suitcase is so key. The strong suction can extract sneaky bed bugs and their eggs hiding in the nooks and crannies of your luggage. Focus the vacuum nozzle along seams, wheels, pockets, zippers—every inch of fabric and crevice. Use the narrow crevice tool to probe into the wheel cavity and handle recesses.

Some bed bugs just won't budge, clinging determinedly to the fabric. For these tough bugs, pass a lint roller over your suitcase to snag them. The sticky sheets capture bugs that vacuuming alone might miss. Just make sure to dispose of each used lint roller sheet immediately in a tightly sealed bag.

Check inside your suitcase too, running the vacuum nozzle over the entire interior. Flip it over to vacuum the underside as well. If your luggage contains any built-in organization compartments, vacuum each one thoroughly. Bed bugs squeeze into tight spaces.

Pay special attention to vacuum over and around any cracks, folds or holes in the fabric. These are prime spots for bed bugs to hunker down inside. The strong suction pulls them out of hiding.

Once you’ve vacuumed every nook and cranny, take your suitcase outside and give it a few good shakes. This dislodges any remaining bugs. You can even leave the suitcase outdoors in the sunlight for several hours. The heat and UV rays will kill bugs and eggs you may have missed.

If bed bugs did hitchhike home in your luggage, vacuuming helps contain the infestation to your suitcase alone. You catch them before they spread to your furniture or bedding. It’s much simpler to treat just the bag.

Some people recommend spraying luggage with rubbing alcohol or an insecticide after vacuuming. But use caution with chemicals, ensuring proper ventilation, and test on small hidden sections of fabric first. Overzealous spraying could damage your suitcase. Plus most bed bugs are impervious to sprays anyhow—vacuuming is more effective.

After vacuuming and inspecting your luggage, unpack directly into the washing machine. Wash all your clothes—even the clean ones—on the hottest cycle possible. Then dry everything on the highest heat setting. This one-two sanitization punch kills any lingering bed bugs or eggs that vacuum missed.

Finally, before storing your empty suitcase, seal it in a large plastic bag for 6-12 months. Any bed bugs trapped inside will eventually die off. You can also place sticky traps or a bug strip inside the bag to trap and kill off bugs.

Don't Let the Bedbugs Bite: How to Avoid Bringing Home Unwanted Souvenirs from Your Paris Vacation - Wash Clothes in Hot Water Immediately

black ant on pink flower,

As tempting as it may be to toss your suitcase in the corner and collapse into bed after a long Paris vacation, don’t give in! Take the time to immediately wash all clothing in hot water instead. This crucial step could stop a bed bug infestation in its tracks.

While vigilant inspection and prevention measures help deter bed bugs, the sneaky pests still may have stowed away deep in your luggage. Washing clothes right when you get home destroys any lingering bed bugs or eggs before they have a chance to spread. Don't give them time to crawl away and hide in your bedroom.

Warm or cold water won't cut it—hot water is key. Use the hottest temperature possible for your washer, ideally at least 130°F. Exposure to heat of at least 113°F kills bed bugs and eggs quickly.

Start by digging out any sealed plastic bags containing dirty clothes from your Paris vacation. Dump these straight into the washing machine without opening the bags first. The plastic bag barrier contains any bugs, so they don’t scatter in your laundry room. Set the washer to the longest, hottest cycle.

Next, unpack the rest of your suitcase directly into the washing machine. Flip clothing inside out before tossing in—this exposes any hidden bugs. Check pockets too. Don’t shake items out or dally pre-sorting, as dislodged bugs may crawl away. Just unload straight into the washer.

Include your clean clothes too, like that spare sealed outfit you packed just in case. Bed bugs can hide deep in folds and seams, infesting seemingly clean garments. Take zero chances.

If you traveled with any delicate items unable to withstand hot water, like lingerie or bathing suits, seal them in a plastic bag for the washing machine. The plastic protects fabrics while still allowing hot water and detergent to penetrate and kill bugs. Just be sure to seal the bag completely.

For extra assurance, you can add a bed bug laundry additive like SteriFab to the wash cycle. This antimicrobial solution kills any sneaky bugs that may survive the hot water alone. But steer clear of bleach—it doesn’t kill bed bugs and may ruin clothing.

Once the longest, hottest wash cycle finishes, immediately transfer wet clothes to the dryer. Choose the highest heat drying setting, ideally over 120°F. Like hot water, sustained exposure to high heat kills bed bugs and their eggs. Monitor clothes closely, re-drying any damp sections. Proper drying is essential.

black ant on pink flower,

After washing your clothes from Paris, don't leave out a crucial final step for delicate items—immediate dry cleaning. Fabrics like wool suits, silk dresses, and rayon blouses require special care. The agitation and high heat of home washing can damage or shrink these clothes. But dry cleaning provides an effective bed bug remedy without ruining your fine garments.

Take delicate items directly to the dry cleaner right after washing everything else. Same-day service ensures any bed bugs don't have time to escape the fabric and spread. The chemical fumigation process used by dry cleaners penetrates every fiber to kill bugs and eggs on contact. It's a non-negotiable final precaution.

The dry cleaning agents perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene are highly effective bed bug exterminators. As clothes tumble and soak in the vapors during cleaning, the chemicals permeate every thread and seam. Any parasitic hitchhikers don't stand a chance. The proteins in bed bugs essentially unravel on a molecular level when exposed to these harsh solvents.

But these chemical fumes pose risks to employees when used improperly. Make sure your local dry cleaner meets EPA safety standards for proper equipment like vapor containment. You want their process to kill bugs, not harm workers. Reputable dry cleaners understand the nuances of bed bug removal and will treat your items with effective techniques and care. Don't let pest paranoia lead to cutting corners on safety.

Also, take time to thoroughly shake out clothing before dry cleaning too. Pass a lint roller over to snag clinging bugs. Turn garments inside-out and check every pocket. Pretreat any visible dark stains, which may indicate bed bug excrement. The more bugs dislodged beforehand, the better.

For delicates like lingerie and bathing suits, seal in a plastic bag first. This prevents bugs from escaping during transport to the dry cleaner. Secure the whole way shut with a twist tie or tape—no crack is too small for a bed bug! Mark the bag clearly as containing possible bed bugs so employees take proper precautions. Discreetly notify the desk upon drop-off as well. No need to announce it to the whole shop.

When picking up dry-cleaned items, check for any lingering stains since fumes can set them. Point out any spots to the cleaner for re-treatment—bed bugs could still be hiding inside. Then place pre-treated clothes directly into the dryer again at home, even after professional cleaning. The one-two punch provides guaranteed protection. Don't take chances with stowaway bugs.

Don't Let the Bedbugs Bite: How to Avoid Bringing Home Unwanted Souvenirs from Your Paris Vacation - Look for Signs of Bites After Your Trip

Esto fue observado por el Varón Dominique Larrea, médico de Napoleón Bonaparte.

Even after thoroughly washing and drying your clothes, vacuuming luggage, and taking all other precautions, bed bugs could still have hitched a ride home with you from Paris. That's why carefully checking your body for any signs of bites after traveling is so important. Don't dismiss any mysterious marks as just a rash - recognize the telltale signs of bed bugs. Being able to identify their bite patterns can prevent an infestation from spiraling out of control.

Bed bugs typically bite exposed skin at night while you sleep, leaving small, swollen reddish bumps. The bites often appear in straight or zigzagged lines of multiple welts, sometimes called "breakfast, lunch, and dinner." This pattern reflects how bed bugs drink blood from one spot, get disturbed, then relocate and bite again.

The bites don't necessarily itch at first. Small children sometimes don't even feel the tiny pinpricks of bed bugs feeding. But for most people, the bites become intensely itchy and irritating over the next few days. Some unfortunate souls have severe allergic reactions too, with large painful welts that blister or ooze.

Watch out for delayed mysterious itching, rashes, or hives appearing a day or more after you return from Paris. Bites often take a full day to become visible. Note the location on your body too - bed bugs typically bite exposed areas like arms, neck, face and ankles. See clusters of red dots on your wrists? Probably bed bugs.

Bed bug bites can easily be mistaken for other insect bites, such as mosquitoes or fleas. But they have a more distinct rounded, raised appearance, like little red bumps. Mosquito bites usually look flatter and flea bites appear in tighter single clusters. The pattern of lined-up clusters is the best giveaway for bed bugs.

Don't scratch the bites! Itching opens the door to infection. Anti-itch creams containing menthol, pramoxine, or hydrocortisone can help reduce inflammation and irritation. For very severe bites, oral antihistamines and antibiotic creams may be needed to prevent infection and reduce swelling.

If you do suspect bed bug bites after returning from Paris, act immediately! Strip sheets and check your mattress, bed frame, and headboard thoroughly for signs of infestation. Inspect along seams, crevices, and folds first. Confirming just one bed bug means you likely have an established presence at home already. Eliminate the infestation before it multiplies further.

Don't let embarrassment or denial prevent you from contacting an exterminator at the first signs of bed bugs either. These pests multiply rapidly in the shadows. Pretending a few mystery bites are just mosquitos or anxiety about being judged for having bugs can quickly spiral into a massive infestation. Face the facts and facts fast.

black ant on pink flower,

Even after running your suitcase through the washing machine and dryer, bed bugs could still be clinging on for dear life deep in the fabric fibers. These resilient little pests can withstand a lot of tumbling and heat. That's why it's critical to isolate your luggage away from other belongings for several months after traveling. This quarantine period allows any remaining bed bugs to fully die off.

Start by sealing your freshly laundered luggage into a plastic garbage bag immediately after washing and drying. Click and twist tie the bag completely shut, with no openings whatsoever. Bed bugs are champion escape artists—that tiny gap in the plastic will become their open door. You can add a pest strip to the bag to kill bugs during isolation, but use with caution and proper ventilation.

Store this sealed suitcase in an area far removed from bedrooms, couches, and other upholstered furniture where errant bed bugs could escape to and infest. An unused hallway closet or sealed basement room works well. Even set the bag outside if you can. You want those bugs completely segregated and contained.

Leave the bag sealed for at least 6 months before use. This allows enough time for any remaining adult bed bugs or hatching eggs to die inside the plastic entombment. Without a blood meal source, bed bugs perish between 4-6 months. Double that time just to be safe.

After the isolation period, open outdoors and vacuum the empty bag thoroughly before reuse. The months of captivity stress bed bugs out, encouraging them to escape their plastic prison—vacuuming removes any desperate escapees. Then seal the suitcase back up for storage, sans plastic. Placing a passive sticky monitor inside can help detect any new hatching bugs.

Take the same stringent precautions with any other fabrics that traveled to infested areas, including backpacks, purses, hats, and shoes. Launder thoroughly in hot water and dry on high heat, then seal items in plastic bags for at least 6 months before use again. Add pest strips to kill bugs during isolation. Store bags safely removed from other furnishings.

This isolating and monitoring method also applies for furniture or room décor purchased from bed bug hot zones while traveling. Seal items in plastic immediately upon returning home. Leave encased for half a year before opening in a pest-free room. Destroy any packing materials too, as bugs love hiding inside. Never store purchases near beds or couches either during isolation.

While it may seem extreme, many Previously Infested Persons (PIPs) swear by the strict 6-12 month sealed isolation and laundering routine to avoid recurrent bed bug battles after travel. One PIP even confessed to burning all fabrics that had entered a bed bug nest, scorched earth style. So consider luggage quarantine insurance for peace of mind.
