Coronavirus and Updated Airline Travel Policies

On January 30, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a public health emergency of international concern. With the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak countries all over the world are taking precautions in order to minimize the risk. Just a few weeks later the World Health Organization declared a pandemic. Following the news, many airlines were forced to suspend or reduce their daily operations. We have the latest information from airlines all around the world on what routes have been suspended, and how to get a refund on your already booked trip.

European Airlines Cancellation Policies

Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

If you booked your ticket before May 31, 2020, you can postpone your departure date until 30 September 2020 without any change fees. However, your new trip must begin no later than 30 November 2020.

If you purchased a non-refundable ticket for a flight departing before 31 May 2020 and would like to cancel it, you can complete the form given on the website to obtain a travel voucher. The non-refundable voucher is valid for 1 year on all Air France, KLM, and Delta flights. You can find the Air France voucher here and the KLM voucher here.

Booking Info:

If you book a trip before March 31, 2020, you have until 30 September 2020 to postpone your departure date without any change fees. This new booking should be for a date prior to 30 November 2020.

Alitalia

For the passengers who purchased a ticket issued by 3 April for a flight departing between 23 February and 31 May can request one of the following by 31 May:

  • You can change your booking for another trip taking place by 31 December
  • Refund with a voucher of equal value to the ticket purchased, valid for one year, to fly to any destination offered by Alitalia
  • If your flight was canceled, you have the option of receiving a refund of the price of the ticket or of the remaining value of the part of the trip which has not yet been completed
  • All passengers with MilleMiglia award ticket, who decide not to travel, can request a change of reservation or choose to reclaim their miles and receive a refund of the airport taxes

As for new bookings with Alitalia, most other countries have banned any incoming traffic from Italy.

British Airways

With British Airways you have the option to cancel your booking and receive a voucher for the same value. Your voucher can be used as part payment towards a future booking to any destination. You should redeem your voucher for travel on flights taken within 12 months of your original date of departure. Also, your award tickets for travel through May 31, 2020, are not being charged redeposit fees. You can cancel your flight and geta  voucher here.

Finnair

With Finnair you can change your travel date flexibly without a change fee and travel until 30 November 2020, under the following circumstances:

  • You made your booking latest on 30 April 2020
  • Your original travel date is latest on 30 November 2020
  • You have a Finnair operated and marketed flight on Finnair ticket
  • There are available seats on your chosen new flight
  • You make the change before the departure of your original flight. Please note that you need to select new dates for your travel when making the change

New bookings:

Between April 1, 2020, and 30 June 2020, Finnair will operate only the following routes with a reduced capacity:

  • Domestic Finland – Kuopio, Mariehamn, Oulu, Rovaniemi. Also, during Easter time Finnair will fly to Ivalo, Kittilä, and Kuusamo  
  • Europe – Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Munich, Paris, Stockholm, Zürich. Also, once the travel restrictions have been lifted Finnair will fly to Copenhagen, Moscow, Oslo, St Petersburg, and Tallinn.

LOT Polish Airlines

LOT, Poland’s national carrier, announced that all flights would be suspended as of 15 March until 28 March. This includes flights from both Poland and Hungary.

If you booked your flight before March 31, 2020, with flights scheduled to happen between March 28 and April 24, 2020. You can now change your travel date for free to flights by December 31, 2020.

Norwegian Air

For Norwegian flights that are still operating, the airline is allowing one fee-free change for its LowFare, LowFare+, and Premium tickets booked through March 22. The tickets must have been for travel completed on or before November 30, and the new flights must take place before that date as well.

TAP Air Portugal

All customers affected by flight cancellations in this period should visit the TAP refund page, to obtain a voucher for the total amount paid for the ticket. TAP Air Portugal is also allowing one-time changes to reservations for no fee. Tickets for travel through April 30 are eligible to be rescheduled for travel starting before the end of the year. Changes must be made at least 24 hours before travel.

Iberia

Passengers that have a ticket issued before March 11th to fly between March 1st and April 30th, have the option to change the dates or request a voucher for the amount of the ticket. The voucher will remain valid until 31 March 2021, and there are no restrictions regarding travel dates or destinations. You can even spend them on more than one flight. Changes of your ticket are also allowed for travel before 31 March 2021 with the following exceptions:

  • 30 April-2 May
  • 1 July-15 August
  • 9-12 October
  • 4-9 December
  • 19 December-10 January 2021
  • 24-31 March 2021

Lufthansa Group

Lufthansa Group includes Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Air Dolomiti. Out of them, Austrian Airlines suspended its operations as of March 19, 2020, and Brussels Airlines suspend operations as of March 21, 2020.

Passengers that booked tickets up to and including 31 March 2020 and with a confirmed travel date up to and including 31 December 2020, can keep the ticket without having to commit to a new flight date right away. Existing bookings will initially be canceled, but the ticket and ticket value will remain unchanged and can be extended to a new departure date up to and including 31 December 2020. You can also rebook to another destination. The new flight must be booked until 31 August 2020. In addition, Lufthansa Group will offer every rebooked ticket a discount of 50€ on the ticket price. Rebooking fees will still not be charged.

Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic will waive change fees for tickets that were originally issued on or before March 11, 2020, for travel up to and including May 31, 2020. All travel must be completed by April 30, 2021.

Aer Lingus

Passengers who booked before 06 March and that were due to travel between now and 31st May 2020, will be able to change their booking without incurring a change fee. Passengers who have booked on or after 06 March, can change their booking without incurring a change fee. This policy applies to all routes on the Aer Lingus network. Guests may re-book to another day of travel.

North America and Other American Airlines Cancelation policies

Air Canada

For passengers that purchased a ticket before March 4, 2020, for travel before April 30, 2020, Air Canada will allow a one-time change to the flight without incurring a change fee up to two hours before the departing flight. You can also cancel your booking and credit what you paid against future travel. All travel must be completed by December 31, 2020.

New bookings:

For passengers that purchase a ticket between March 4 and March 31, 2020, Air Canada will allow a one-time change to the flight without incurring a change fee up to two hours before the departing flight. You can also cancel your booking and credit what you paid against future travel. All travel must be completed by December 31, 2020.

Aeromexico

For travel to and from the United States changes are permitted with no change fee on flights with travel dates between March 1, 2020, and February 25, 2021. Rescheduled travel must take place before February 28, 2021. For travel to and from all other destinations, changes are permitted with no change fee on flights with travel dates between March 9, 2020, and May 31, 2020. Rescheduled travel must take place before October 31, 2020.

Avianca

Avianca has announced that it will suspend all international passenger flights starting on March 23, 2020, for at least 30 days. Avianca will also cut domestic capacity within Colombia by 84%.

Passengers with tickets with a flight date until April 30, 2020, will have the option to change their itinerary without penalty. Passengers with tickets with a flight date after April 30, 2020, will have the option to change their itinerary without penalty for tickets purchased between March 4 and 31, 2020.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines is allowing no-fee changes and cancellations to the following:

  • Tickets purchased on or before February 26, 2020, for travel through April 30, 2020, have two levels of waivers:
  1. If you purchased a Saver fare for travel through April 30, 2020, you may cancel your trip without a fee and receive credit for future travel
  2. If you purchased a nonrefundable First Class, main or award ticket for travel through April 30, 2020, you may Change your trip without a fee. New travel must be completed by February 28, 2021. A fare difference may apply to your new itinerary. You can also cancel your trip without a fee and receive a credit for future travel
  • New tickets purchased between February 27, 2020, and March 31, 2020: Non-refundable first class, main cabin and award tickets may be changed for no fee, with new travel completed by February 28, 2021, or canceled with travel funds placed into your Alaska Account or a credit card certificate via email. Fare difference applies

American Airlines

American Airlines has announced that it will waive all change fees for any new flights booked from March 1 to 16. The offer applies to any of its published fares and changes must be made at least 14 days before travel. American is also eliminating fees for changes to routes to Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, the Caribbean, the South Pacific, or any ticket bought before March 1 for travel through May 31.

Delta

Delta is also waiving change fees for all international flights booked between March 1 and 31, as well as offering no-fee changes to all domestic and international flights for travel through April 30 as long as the tickets were issued on or before March 9.

Hawaiian Airlines

The state of Hawaii is in the process of introducing a policy that will require all visitors to Hawaii to self-quarantine for 14 days. This policy should come into effect on March 26, 2020. After that, we might see some additional changes to the Hawaiian Airlines cancelation policy.

Hawaiian is giving fliers one-time fee-free changes for travel through the end of the year or the option to cancel for a travel voucher or refund.

JetBlue

JetBlue started waiving all change and cancellation fees in late February. For new flights purchased between February 27 and March 11 for travel completed by June 1, all cancellations and changes would be free.

United Airlines

All passengers scheduled to fly between March 10 and April 30, will have the option to make changes to date and time at no cost, regardless of destination or when the ticket was purchased. For new international or domestic airfares purchased between March 3 and March 31, United is allowing passengers to change the dates and times of their flights with no charge for up to a year after the ticket was issued.

Oceania Airlines Cancelation Policies

Qantas

Qantas has suspended all international flights.

All passengers with existing bookings on any international or Australian domestic flight until May 31, 2020, who no longer wish to travel, can cancel their flight and get the value of their booking as a flight credit. Cancellations must be processed by March 31, 2020. Flight credit is good until September 30, 2020, or twelve months from the original purchase date.

Air New Zealand

All change fees for new tickets issued from March 5 to March 31, 2020, are waived, you can also receive a credit that is valid for twelve months from the original flight date. Existing long-haul bookings up to March 4, 2020, with travel prior to July 1, 2020, will have fee changes waived once per booking or the customer can rebook within 12 months of the original date.

Middle Eastern Airlines Cancelation Policies

Emirates

Emirates is giving the option to customers on flights booked before March 31 to rebook for free or get a refund in the form of money or a travel voucher. Flights must be booked for travel before May 31 and rebookings are allowed until June 30.

Etihad

Passengers scheduled to fly before 30 June 2020, but whose flights have been canceled, or that are unable to travel for other reasons, can be rebooked for departures up to 30 June 2020, without standard change fees. Only one change is permitted. Further changes will be charged standard fees. Re-routing or re-booking can only proceed if there are no travel restrictions on intended routes.

Qatar

Qatar is offering passengers on all flights, or customers who will be booking flights through June 30 the option to change their travel dates or exchange their ticket for a travel voucher that would be valid for one year. The reservation must be changed at least three days before departure. This is one of the most flexible policies we have seen so far!
