South African Airways announces restructuring with route cancellations
The joint Business Rescue Practitioners of South African Airways announced measures to save money and support the airline’s transformation. These measures include changes to the route network, deployment of more fuel-efficient aircraft, and renegotiation of contracts with suppliers. South African Airways has been under bankruptcy protection since late 2019. The airline will discontinue all domestic flights except Cape Town. Starting February 29, 2020, South African Airways will operate flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town on a reduced basis.
Hong Kong, Sao Paulo, Munich, Guanzhou, Luanda, Entebbe, Abidjan via Accra, and Ndola are all canceled. These changes won’t affect services operated by low-cost subsidiary Mango, or Airlink, South African airways express carrier. They will also continue to operate international services between Johannesburg and Frankfurt, London Heathrow, New York, Perth, and Washington via Accra. Customers that already booked a flight on any canceled international, and regional, routes will receive a full refund. Those customers that booked on canceled domestic flights will be moved to services operated by Mango.
From the official press release:
The initiatives we are taking now will strengthen SAA’s business. We believe that this should provide reassurance to our loyal customers that SAA is moving in the right direction. We are focused on our mandate to restore SAA’s commercial health and create an airline that South Africans will be proud of.
South African Airways will be ending service from Johannesburg to the following four destinations in Africa:
- Abidjan via Accra
As for international destinations, South African Airways will be ending service to following destinations:
- Hong kong
- Sao Paulo
