On January 30, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a public health emergency of international concern. Hilton Worldwide Holdings revealed this week that it would be temporarily closing 150 of its namesake hotels in China due to the coronavirus outbreak. CEO and president of the company, Chris Nassetta made the announcement on a call with investors. Hilton operates four hotels in Wuhan and 225 hotels in greater China. Once the outbreak is over, it will probably take a minimum of three to six months to get things back to normal. Around 150 Hilton hotels with a total of around 33,000 rooms have been temporarily closed in China due to the deadly outbreak.
“As it relates to the coronavirus, it goes without saying that the safety and well-being of our team members and our guests remain a paramount priority, as we continue to carefully monitor the situation. We’re working with local governments and health authorities globally to best support our operations and our communities in impacted areas.” Nassetta said.
Over 73 airlines and a number of cruise ship companies have also canceled services to China. British Airways was the first major airline to suspend its flights to and from China because of the coronavirus outbreak. Lufthansa Group has also decided to suspend its Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian Airlines flights to and from mainland China. American Airlines has announced that they’re suspending all operations to and from mainland China until March 27, 2020. Another US airline that took this step is Delta Airways. With the virus showing no signs of stopping we are probably going to see an even bigger hit to the travel industry in the next couple of weeks.
