United Airlines CEO stepping down

The current United Airlines CEO, Oscar Munoz, will step down from his position in May of 2020. The new Chief Executive Officer will be Scott Kirby. Oscar Munoz took the position of the CEO after previous Chairman and CEO Jeff Smisek came under fire for a corruption scandal. Before becoming the CEO, Munoz was a long-time member of the United Airlines board. After Munoz steps down as CEO he will stay on as a chairman of United Airlines.

“When I joined United as CEO, I laid out ambitious goals to build a new spirit of United by regaining the trust of our employees and customers — and I’m proud of how far we’ve come. With United in a stronger position than ever, now is the right time to begin the process of passing the baton to a new leader.” Munoz said in a press statement.

New Leadership for United Airlines

Kirby joined United Airlines in August 2016. Munoz himself recruited Scott Kirby for the job. Kirby currently holds the position of President of United Airlines. Before joining United Airlines he was President of American Airlines. He has over 30 years of experience in the commercial airline industry and a degree from the US Air Force Academy.

“I am honored to be named the next CEO of United and to succeed Oscar. His leadership has been truly transformational for United Airlines. I look forward to working with Oscar, the Board, our established leadership team and every United employee as we drive forward our proven strategy and focus on being the airline customers choose to fly and return to time and again.” Scott Kirby said in a press statement.

United Airlines’ current Chairman, Jane Garvey, will retire from the Board in May 2020. He will retire after more than a decade on the job. Oscar Munoz will fill this position for a one year term and continue to cooperate closely with Scott Kirby. United Airlines also announced that Ted Philip will become Lead Independent Director in 2020 after the Annual Meeting of Shareholders.
