United Airlines is cutting back on even more flights to Hong Kong due to weaker demands and a rocky political situation rocking Hong Kong at the moment. Hong Kong has been under mass demonstrations for five months now, and we are yet to see signs of slowing down. The Hong Kong protests were started by the extradition bill which would have allowed the extradition of fugitives to mainland China. That has led to thousands of people either delaying travel to Hong Kong or canceling their trips altogether.

United Airlines cuts back on more Hong Kong flights
First, United Airlines suspended its daily flight service from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport to Hong Kong. The reason were massive protests that have caused a huge drop in passengers. This cancelation left United operating non-stop flights from Chicago to only two other Chinese destinations, Shanghai and Beijing.
“While our service between the United States and HKG (Hong Kong) remains a vital part of our network, we have decided to suspend service between ORD (Chicago) and HKG after the return flight from HKG on Sept. 9, 2019,” the company said in a statement.
From January 12, 2020, through March 27, the route Newark to Hong Kong will move from daily to three times weekly. This route will operate just on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The flight will only operate two days per week in late January and at the beginning of February.
Tourism at an all-time low in Hong Kong
With the current political climate in Hong Kong, the route cuts come as no surprise. Other Airlines are also either cutting routes or delaying flights. Cathay Pacific also suffered a major financial loss following the airport sit-in protest. Over the past five months, Hong Kong has seen a drop-down in hotel stays as well. Major hotel chains were putting their employees on mandatory leave and dropping down the prices. The hotels had an all-time low with their charges in over 50 years.
