Even before the protest rocked Hong Kong the airline has been struggling financially. After the protests started all tourism in and out of Hong Kong dropped massively. That did not help the already struggling airline. First, they started cutting the number of flights made. Now, Hong Kong Airlines announced they will be cutting all flights to the US.
Hong Kong Airlines cutting all US Flights
The airline recently launched routes to the US, so they were quite short-lived. Hong Kong Airlines launched flights to LA in December 2017 and San Francisco in 2018. The Hong Kong to San Francisco route was already cut last month, after little over a year of existence. Now, they are cutting the Hong Kong to LA route. Thee route is being cut as of February 8, 2020. With the closure of the Los Angeles flights, the airline’s last long-haul destination is Vancouver.
Hong Kong Airlines is backed by the Chinese conglomerate HNA Group, and they are struggling financially. However, as a reason for the end of the US routes the airline is blaming the ongoing protests.
Massive tourism drop in Hong Kong
Since June 9 streets of Hong Kong have been overrun by protestors. Clashes have broken out in various parts of the city over the past months, including at Hong Kong International Airport. Months of pro-democracy protests and tension with mainland China have taken their toll on Hong Kong’s top carriers. Cathay, Hong Kong Airlines competitor, has also been cutting flights since the protest began. Hong Kong’s hotel workers are paying the price for months of anti-government protests as well. Many workers have been placed involuntarily on paid and unpaid leave. Occupancy rates are the lowest that Hong Kong has seen in years! It is estimated that hotel rates have dropped down more than 50% and show no signs of going back up. The protests are still raging on daily.
