EasyJet has become the world’s first major airline to offset all carbon emissions given off by its flights. This will be a first attempt from a major airline to become the world’s first carbon-neutral airline.
The first airline to operate carbon neutral flights
A carbon offset is a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide to compensate for emissions made elsewhere. The British airline easyJet announced on Tuesday that it would begin to offset emissions from its 331 planes starting immediately. This move will cost the company over €29.2 million in the next financial year. In a partnership with advisory company Climate Focus, only carbon offset programs that meet the Gold Standard or Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) accreditation have been selected. EasyJet has also partnered with project developers EcoAct and First Climate on projects such as forest conservation in South America, clean water in Uganda and Eritrea and many more.
EasyJet CEO Johan Lundgren said in a press statement:
“Climate change is an issue for all of us. At easyJet we are tackling this challenge head-on by choosing to offset the carbon emissions from the fuel used for all of our flights starting today. In doing so we are committing to operating net-zero carbon flights across our network – a world first by any major airline. We acknowledge that offsetting is only an interim measure until other technologies become available to radically reduce the carbon emissions of flying, but we want to take action on carbon now.”
British Airways announced last month its plans to offset emissions from all its domestic flights from next year. Also, the owner of British Airways, IAG, became the first group to commit to net-zero carbon flying by 2050. Some other airlines including Lufthansa and Finnair have created programs allowing customers to offset part of their flights. This is a huge step for EasyJet as well as other airlines on the path of preserving nature.
