WOW Air, the Icelandic budget airline that went bankrupt in March, will be back in business in December instead of in October as they first scheduled. The airline’s first scheduled air route will be between Reykjavík and Washington D.C. This was confirmed by Michele Ballarin, the chairman of the American aviation company USAerospace Associates.
What happened in March?
The Icelandic budget airline went bankrupt in March leaving thousands of passengers stranded all across Europe and North America. During this, the former WOW Air CEO Skúli Mogensen said that time simply ran out before the airline was able to find funding to keep them operational.
The relaunch of WOW Air
Michelle Ballarin has purchased the assets to WOW Air. She is one of the owners of the USAerospace. Ballarin will become the chairman of WOW Air, and the main base of the airline will be at Washington Dulles airport along with facilities at Keflavík airport and an office located in Reykjavík. She said that she wants to make ‘flying fun’ again.
Now the company that took over WOW Air moved the launch from October to December. Ballarin announced the delay on October 8.
“Wow Air intends to be fully operational in December with ticket sales hitting the market in November. Significant market adjustments have taken place since the announcement of the re-launch of WOW Air. This contraction of carriers has provided an increase in aircraft inventory previously not available in the late summer. WOW Air will take this opportunity to acquire and reconfigure our launch aircraft in the best interests of our customers and shareholders.” Michelle Ballarin said in a statement to FlightGlobal
The airline’s schedules, routes, or destinations are yet to be announced following the delay.
