The new California law
Governor Gavin Newsom announced he had signed a law banning hotels from giving guests plastic bottles filled with shampoo, conditioner or soap. It takes effect in 2023 for hotels with more than 50 rooms and 2024 for hotels with less than 50 rooms. Those hotels that violate this can be fined $500 for their first offense and $2000 for the next ones. California is already on a path to reduce plastic waste. Grocery stores are not allowed to give a single-use plastic bag without a fee. Also, customers can get a plastic straw only if they request one.
The European Union is banning a wide range of single-use plastic items, like cutlery and plates, by 2021.
Hotels are already implementing this rule globally!
Marriott International announced that they’d eliminate single-use shower toiletries globally by December 2020. They will eliminate small plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel from its hotel rooms worldwide. Many other companies are implementing similar rules. IHG said it will eliminate about 200 million tiny bottles each year by 2021. Walt Disney Co. said it would replace small plastic shampoo bottles at its resorts and on its cruise ships. Many other companies, like the five Soneva Resorts in Thailand and the Maldives, have also denounced plastic bottles. In 2018 Marriott started the process of switching to bigger bottles with pump dispensers which are more eco-friendly.
Marriott already eliminated the use of more than 1 billion plastic straws per year and about a quarter billion stirrers. You use your plastic straw for around 15 minutes, but it can never fully decompose.
