United Airlines Baggage Fees – What you need to know

United has a pretty basic baggage policy. Generally, you’ll get one free carry-on and one free personal item and you’ll have to pay $25 for your first checked bag and $35 for the second checked bag. However, these fees can vary based on the fare class you book, elite status, flight route (international), and weight and size of your luggage.

They’ll allow you to bring 1 carry-on bag and 1 Personal item.
Size Restrictions:

  • Personal: 17″ x 10″ x 9″
  • Carry-On: 22″ x 14″ x 9″

Personal items are usually backpacks, shoulder bags, purses, laptop bag or other small items. The personal items should be able to fit beneath the bottom of the seat in front of you and bag sizes are available in the check-in area, so you can double-check the size of your items once you get to the airport.
There are no weight limits for carry-ons just size dimension limitations.

United does not provide you with free checked luggage. The fees charged can vary by route. Except for free checked baggage due to airline status, cabin class, or credit card membership, you’ll generally have to pay:

  • $30 for the first checked bag
  • $40 for the second checked bag
  • $150 to $200 for the third checked bag

The maximum exterior dimension of standard checked baggage is 62 inches (158 cm), including handles and wheels. The maximum weight for United checked baggage depends on which class you’re flying and/or your level of elite status.
United is now recommending all passengers use their official baggage fee calculator tool here.

As with checked luggage fees, United recommends all passengers use their official baggage fee calculator tool for excess baggage fees. Generally, for luggage that is 63.0 to 115.0 linear inches, you can expect to pay $200 extra per bag. Baggage with total outer dimensions measuring more than 115 inches will not be accepted as checked baggage.

Keep in mind that United Airlines does allow passengers the ability to pre-pay for luggage online or via the mobile app when you check-in from 24 hours before the flight departure.
