WOW – up to 90,000 Avios for under $180? – Iberia’s new promotion – should you give it a try?

Posted on June 21, 2018 by in Online Shopping Mall Deals

Frequent Miler unearthes a promotion that seems indeed too good to be true. Iberia is offering 9,000 Avios per booking(!) for any Iberia flights between now and June 24th.

Iberia’s website can be confusing as you often see translations from Spanish that are barely understandable; but this one seems better and even gives plain English examples.

An additional 9,000 Avios for free. Honestly!

Buy a ticket by 24 June in any class and for any destination, and they’re yours.
You have until 1 December to spend them.

Special offer of an extra 9,000 Avios for each ticket purchased between 21 and 24 June 2018 (maximum of 90,000 promotional Avios per member) on for a flight operated by Iberia, Iberia Express or Air Nostrum. The Avios will be added within 10 days of the purchase to the Iberia Plus account of all customers identified as members of the Iberia Plus programme during the purchase process.

If the customer requests a refund, either because it is permitted by the fare or for any other reason, the promotional Avios will be withdrawn from their account. The extra promotional Avios not redeemed by 1 December 2018 will be withdrawn from the customer’s account. The redemption terms and conditions are subject to the general terms and conditions of the Iberia Plus programme.

For example, if a customer purchases tickets on for three people to fly from Seville to Madrid and two of the people are identified as Iberia Plus members during the purchase process, 9,000 Avios will be credited to both of these people within 10 days of the purchase. These two people must have redeemed at least 9,000 Avios by 1 December 2018, or this same amount of Avios will be withdrawn from their account.

Some flights Iberia operates are incredibly inexpensive as the Palma de Mallorca to Madrid one-ways, especially next winter for just $19.

So technically you CAN get 90,000 Avios for just under $200.

The promotion clearly spells out the date of purchase as the relevant date to get the Avios. Avios are awarded after 10 days (they will expire if not used by December 1st). There is no mentioning of a flight date.

According to the Terms and Conditions you can keep the Avios as long as you are not refunding the tickets (those cheap tickets can’t be refunded anyways).

So what will happen if you buy a bunch of tickets for next year but never show up? Iberia isn’t a friendly airline to deal with and they may cancel your award ticket you booked with the promotional Avios and/or close your account without warning. But if you book and use an award ticket before December 1st (or before your flight date) how will they know (and will they even worry about that?).

I would not expect this promotion to still be online by tomorrow. If you decide to give this a try take plenty of screen shots and expect to fight Iberia for your points. But it is so tempting I might go all in!
