Expedia’s ‘discount brand’ Orbitz almost always has a 15% off promo code for hotel bookings available. The current incarnation is INSPIRE – which we used for testing.
In the past I have often discarded it right away since I assumed it excluded all chain hotels.
We have done some research today and ran the list of chain hotel brands through Orbitz and the results may surprise you (they did surprise me!).
Here is the list of chains that DO NOT work for the Orbitz discount code:
– Hilton Hotels
– Mandarin Oriental Hotels
– Marriott Hotels
– Four Seasons Hotels
– Trump Hotels
– Intercontinental Hotels Group
– Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group
– Kempinski Hotels
– Omni Hotels
– Taj Hotels
– MGM Hotels
So far – so much expected.
However the 15% promo code works on all the hotels within these chains!
– Shangri-La Hotels
– Hyatt Hotels
– Wyndham Hotels
– Accor Hotels
– Starwood Hotels
– Best Western Hotels
– LOTTE Hotels
– Melia Hotels and Resorts
– Kimpton Hotels
– Loews Hotels
– Jumeirah Hotels
We have tried both an upmarket and downmarket brand from each chain and results were consistent.
Starwood Hotels and Kimpton Hotels are in the hands of a parent brand that does not allow discounting on Orbitz. However these two brands seem to be able to (still) act independently on Expedia/ Orbitz.
I find it especially surprising that Hyatt Hotels allows discounting given their hard-nosed bargaining with Expedia in 2017.
Most brands strive to have their properties publish the same prices on Expedia as their own channels. Should Expedia be cheaper (happens a lot outside of the US) you can always file a Best Rate Guarantee claim (without applying a coupon!).
If not, 15% off is a great compensation for giving up your elite credits and points. Keep in mind that most chains honor elite benefits for Expedia booked stays (the exception being Hilton).
