Citibank adds Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles as 1:1 partner – Here are the best deals and all you need to know about Turkish Miles & Smiles

Citibank has now added Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles as 1:1 partner for their ThankYou program. Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles has been largely inaccessible before and miles could only be earned by flying.

Now we can redeem our stash of Citi ThankYou points to Miles & Smiles. Here is what you need to know.

Award Rules

Miles & Smiles is similar to other European programs like Miles and More.

Here is the Turkish Miles & Smiles award chart that displays rates for partners and Turkish airlines flights alike. It shows rates for Round Trips.

You can book one-way flights for half the required mileage.

If you change or cancel an award it is just $25 – the now-show fee is $50 (if you miss the flight and cancel after the fact) .

Stopovers are allowed on Turkish Airlines flights and on Star Alliance partner Round Trips if you pay at least 90,000 miles – otherwise no free stopovers.

Mixed cabin classes are NOT allowed.

All taxes and fuel surcharges (according to ITA Matrix) are charged in FULL. Awards inside the US or from Brazil or Hong Kong typically carry no fuel surcharge.

You can’t mix and match airline partners – it breaks the award (it splits iit n two).

You can put a reservation on hold and request availability by calling +18008748875. The agents are usually friendly and speak with a thick Russian accent.

The call center will be able to look up availability for all Turkish Airlines and Star Alliance Partners and put flights on hold. Turkish Airlines flights can be put on hold for one month (!) and partners for 5 days.

The agents can usually look up the price in miles and for Turkish Airlines also the surcharges.

The call center can issue etickets for flights solely on Turkish Airlines as well.

If at least one Star Alliance partner is involved they can only look up mileage but not extra charges. To get the price and get your eticket you HAVE to visit a Turkish airlines sales office.

This makes it much harder to book an award outside Turkey!

I looked up availability using united.com – which matched what the agents can see.

Awards Sweet Spots – US to Istanbul, Europe 1, Europe 2

It is just 90,000 miles Round Trip but to make you of that you will need to be on Turkish Airlines all the way (you will get a free stopover).

However the Turkish Airlines taxes and fees are ~$500 for the Round Trip. Not such a good deal!

Awards Sweet Spots – inside the US & Mexico

The whole US (expect Hawaii) and Mexico is on one award region – just 10,000 miles are needed for a one-way in Economy. United Airlines does NOT have fuel surcharges and awards can be great value!

Awards Sweet Spots – Hawaii to anywhere in the South Pacific

This is a huge region:

Australia, the United States ( Honolulu ), Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Niue, Norfolk Island, Palau, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, New Zealand

15,000 miles one-way on United anywhere in the South Pacific where United flies is a great deal in my book. There will be no fuel surcharges.

Awards Sweet Spots – Istanbul, Europe 1, Europe 2 to most of Africa

Most of Africa is grouped into one region and it is just 10,000 miles from Istanbul (and a little more from Europe).

Algeria, Republic of Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon , Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bisav , Kenya, Liberia , Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco , Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone , Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda

You will have to pay fuel surcharges though at about $100 per leg. Not super cheap but this can still be a great deal.

Awards Sweet Spots – awards from Hong Kong and Brazil

While the points value may vary – there are no fuel surcharges on any of those flights.
