Currency fluctuations are a nomads bread and butter. The value of currency fluctuates a lot over the years and they determine a country’s competitiveness.
There are a few ‘managed currencies’ left and one of those was the Egyptian Pound. Earlier today the government made the decision to ‘float’ the pound and allow the market to find the proper exchange rate.
Cairo and Alexandria already were ‘cheap fare hubs’ with many airlines selling tickets for the Premier Cabins at steep discount if you start your trip in Egypt.
Now it has gotten almost 50% cheaper again. Here are some examples:
These tickets also earn 25,000+ miles, so if you are looking to pad your elite status for Oneworld you should consider a trip to Cairo
– from Cairo/ Alexandria to most American airports served by Qatar for ~$1,300 RT (many, many dates) in Business Class incl. Los Angeles (the longest flight from Doha to the US)
These tickets come up right away at Etihad.com and QatarAirways.com. The trouble is that the currency just changed today and your credit card might not use the right rate (yet). So I would wait at least 24 hours before pulling the trigger on those websites.
