Competition is a wonderful thing sometimes – with the launch of the Chase Sapphire Reserve at the competition American Express is finally improving their rather stale American Express Platinum offer.
Here is the new public 100,000 sign-up link.
Here are the changes:
– the company has again a PUBLIC (!) offer for the 100,000 American Express Business Platinum card
Earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $5,000 and an extra 50,000 points after you spend an additional $10,000…within your first 3 months of Card Membership.
This is a bit like a 4x bonus on spend in the first 3 months. That’s a good amount of spend though and American Express has been cracking down on Manufactured Spending. The last time a 100,000 American Express Platinum link was public most applicants had each transaction and their eligibility for the bonus scrutinized manually an endlessly.
American Express now says that if you had ANY American Express Platinum card product before you would be ineligible for a Personal card. This may or may not extend to the Business Card.
If you never had an American Express Business Platinum you will most likely be able to take advantage – otherwise tread with caution.
– American Express also added the 5x on airfare benefit to all Platinum cards. This works if you buy directly from an airline – transactions from an OTA like Expedia can be hit or miss (they only work if the OTA ‘forwards’ the charge to an airline only which is unpredictable)
– American Express added a 50% rebate to all flight redemptions for holders of the said American Express Business Platinum card for Business and First Class flights. So in essence this makes it 2 cents per point transaction. That’s better than anyone else out there but not a super high value.
– If you spend more than $5,000 in one transaction you will get 50% bonus points as a spend bonus. This is a clever way to encourage high spenders to use their American Express Business Platinum card.
American Express has identified the problem of their super low category bonuses and is starting to improve. I feel they should be more comprehensive about it and not send changes in a piecemeal way. however these are all very useful changes and I hope they keep on coming!
