The European Commission has now cleared Marriott’s acquisition of Starwood
The European Commission has today issued a press release clearing Marriott International’s acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts. The Commissioner for Competition, Margaret Vestager, found the merger to be an important one, both for the hotel industry and its customer base. The investigation confirmed that the takeover would not adversely affect hotel competition in Europe.
The EC investigation evaluated the possible impact of the proposed purchase on competition in Europe in the market for hotel accommodation, as well as in the hotel management and hotel franchising markets.
What happened before the European Commission made their decision…
We let you know about the shock announcement in November that Marriott was due to buy Starwood for a whopping $12.2bn, in order to create the world’s largest hotel company. Combining the two hotel giants would mean more than 1.1 million rooms in over 5,500 properties across the world, spanning more than 100 countries. The takeover decision was unanimously decided by both Marriott and Starwood.
