What’s the deals where you can earn bonus points or miles?
Starwood Preferred Guest and IHG Rewards Club loyalty programs are both currently offering a bonus when you buy points, and British Airways Executive Club is giving away 35% bonus Avios when you convert across your hotel reward points.
SPG is offering a bonus of 30% when you buy or gift at least 5,000 Starpoints through July 1st, 2016. If you buy the maximum amount allowed (30,000 Starpoints per calendar year) with this promotion, the cost per Starpoint is 2.45 cents.
The current IHG Rewards promotion offers members a targeted mystery bonus of up to 100% when you buy points through July 18th, 2016. If you’re offered a bonus of 100% and buy the maximum of 60,000 points, that makes each IHG Rewards Club point cost 0.575 cents each.
British Airways Executive Club members can earn a 35% bonus when you convert your hotel rewards points into Avios through July 5th, 2016. You can convert from:
- Starpoints (convert at least 2,500)
- Marriott Rewards (convert at least 10,000)
- IHG Rewards Club (convert at least 10,000)
- Hyatt Gold Passport (convert at least 5,000)
- Shangri-La Golden Circle Award Points (convert at least 2,500)
- Club Carlson Gold (convert at least 2,000)
- Hilton HHonors (convert at least 10,000)
How do I get the deals to earn bonus points or miles?
Buy or gift your Starpoints here by July 1st, 2016 to get a 30% bonus.
Log in to your IHG Rewards Club account to see what you’ve been targeted with and then buy points by July 18th, 2016.
British Airways Executive Club members can convert hotel points to Avios here by July 5th, 2016 to get a 35% bonus.
Is it worth it to earn bonus points or miles with these deals?
SPG recently offered a 35% bonus, which was the lowest we’d ever seen, and this new offer is slightly higher than the usual 25% bonus. Buying Starpoints can particularly make sense if you transfer to SPG airline partners as you get 25,000 miles for every 20,000 points you transfer.
There was an IHG Rewards Club bonus of 100% offered in May and it wasn’t targeted, so if you aren’t offered 100% with this new mystery bonus, it may be best to wait. With IHG, it can often make sense to buy them to use on the most expensive InterContinental properties or for PointBreaks redemptions.
Converting you hotel rewards into Avios or another airline loyalty program is not usually good value, but in this case, converting Starpoints can be, with the bonus miles you get for every 20,000 points you transfer, as we just mentioned above.
As we’ve let you know before, it’s quite often the case that it’s only really worth buying, gifting or converting points and miles only when they are needed, rather than buying speculatively.
