What’s the deal with the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express?

This card currently offers 25,000 bonus points when you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first three months and there’s no annual fee to pay for the first year (then $95). Plus there’s more perks to owning this card, including no foreign transaction fees, free Boingo WiFi, credit towards elite status and free in-room internet for stays booked on SPG.com. You earn up to 5 points per dollar spent on participating SPG hotels and 1 point per dollar elsewhere.

The Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express also offers 25,000 bonus points with a $5,000 spend in 3 months. You can find out more about this card here and if you apply for both cards and meet the minimum spends, you’ll then have 50k points to splurge on luxury flights or hotels…

Tell me more about using my Starpoints…

Many Starwood Category 1 hotels (from 2,000 Starpoints per night) and Category 2 properties (from 3,000 Starpoints per night) are great value and some Starwoods make Cash & Points rates available. We usually use Starpoints when we get a value of 3 cents per Starpoint or better and when there is no other comparable property in the vicinity.

The biggest benefit for us is the 1:1 miles transfer to most partner airlines and the bonus that comes with it; when you transfer in blocks of 20,000 Starpoints, you get 25,000 miles.

The biggest drawback is that transfers are not instant and can take ten to fourteen days. While some airlines let you put awards on hold (for example American Airlines), most do not, so check availability first. Ideally you should try to find a pattern of availability and have alternative dates ready, should the availability change between transferring and booking.

The 34 Starwood transfer partners as of May, 2016 are:

  • Aegean Airlines 1:1
  • Aeromexico Club Premier 1:1
  • Aeroplan/Air Canada 1:1
  • Airberlin 1:1
  • Air China Companion 1:1
  • Air New Zealand & Airpoints 65:1
  • Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan 1:1

With 30,000 Starpoints, which you can transfer for 35,000 Miles & More miles, you can get from Honolulu to Tashkent in Uzbekistan or Almaty, Kazakhstan one-way in business class on Asiana Airlines – an awesome sweet spot.

You can also experience some great flights from the US, such as Cathay Pacific Business Class one-way to Asia for 40,000 Starpoints, Qatar Business Class to Johannesburg for 60,000 points or Singapore Airlines to Hong Kong for 60,000 points. If you get both the personal and business cards, you’ll have 50,000 sign-up points and will have earned 8,000 points meeting the minimum spends, which is nearly enough for the Qatar or Singapore Airlines flights.

Keep in mind that Starwood and Marriott are merging companies in the near future and the loyalty programs are likely to be dominated by the existing Marriott Rewards rather than by Starwood.

Note that American Express has a rule of one bonus per lifetime, per customer, per product. While this rule has not been enforced for the longest time, the company now seems serious about enforcing it…
