Starwood adds Virgin America as transfer partner – is the 1:1 transfer rate a mistake?

Starwood and Virgin America launched their partnership today. Starwood has a lot of partners already and Virgin America points haven’t been exactly getting a lot of attention.

However Starwood surprised us in adding a 1:1 transfer. Almost everyone else allows only 2:1 transfers to Virgin America Elevate. Elevate points have always priced out as about half what other programs charge. That suddenly makes Virgin America awards look cheap!

Awards come with fuel surcharges but there are a number of gems when using a 1:1 points transfer. Here are some great redemptions on partners Hawaiian Airlines and Virgin Australia that charge no fuel surcharges.

I’d assume the 1:1 transfer rate won’t last for a long time. If you Starwood points (from the recent 35k bonanza) play with the redemption calculator and see what you can find.
