The Holiday Inn Express in Surabaya is located in close proximity to the Sheraton Surabaya, JW Marriott Surabaya in the Surabaya city center. The Surabaya city center is a nitty-gritty affair and walking around isn’t something I’d recommend.
The building is easy to miss and my Uber driver clearly had never been to the hotel. Check-in was super friendly and fast. This must have been the fastest and most prompt check-in I had in Indonesia. The agents knew my name before I arrived, did q quick passport copy and a minute later I was on my way to my room – awesome!
The room was modern and well appointed. I found most chains in Indonesia delivering a modern, above brand standard room experience. The room was also refreshingly cold. The shower works very well and had good pressure and had hot water.
I had trouble getting the WiFi to work as the login page would never come up. I feared a call to the front desk would only make things worse but they fixed it to my surprise and the WiFi came out to a slow but agreeable 1.5Mbit.
I decided to have a drink at the bar when I returned after some exploration and found it odd that my beer was warm – I had to ask a few more time to get a cold beer that did cost about $5 – not cheap for Surabaya!
I found the bed to work well and after a refreshing amount of sleep I looked forward to the breakfast. That was a mistake though since it was very basic and just about fulfilled the Holiday Inn Express brand standard.
In sum this is a great place considering the $35 room rates (and the constant IHG promotions). The room as lovely and the location good. WiFi and breakfast are subpar.
