A350 Qatar, American A321 transcon First Class and other surprising bits of award availability

Many of my favorite awards (to new destinations!) have been more restricted by award availability than miles in my account – recently though it seems award availability has been improving with Oneworld and also Star Alliance. Here are some random observations during the last few days:

– The newly launched Qatar Airways A350 service from New York to Doha is widely available with 4 seats from on November 2016 and more sparsely before that

– Qatar has opened up more space to Africa recently in Business Class

Etihad premium cabin award space for their long haul products is downright amazing – often several seats every day, every flight in Business and First Class – you do need to call the Australian call center though to book it

American is seemingly making every seat available on their A321 trans con from San Francisco to New York – availability is awesome all the way into January 2017

Turkish Airlines Business Class is releasing a good amount of award space twelve months out for their West Coast routes, they were gone for some time

– Emirates has gotten more frugal with award space (at times the whole F cabin seemed available) but it’s still there 12 months out

– South African award availability inside Africa is still timid but some routes (incl. Mauritius) show some availability now

– Cathay Pacific has added some many new flights but award availability has taken a turn for the worse – it’s still there but it’s sporadic even many months out

– while still rare United is releasing some p.s. business class service from SFO and LAX to EWR again – even for two people

What are your observations?
