Voyager Resort Nyali, Mombasa Review

For my stay in Mombasa, I eventually settled into the Voyager Resort in Nyali. The resort was just a block away from the apartment I had originally rented, which hadn’t been as great a deal as I had hoped.

Now the Voyager Resort stretches out on to the beautiful Mombasa Beach. While the beach is public, the resort occupies a huge area right behind it. It’s a massive property and comes with three pools, a huge tropical garden and a seemingly endless amount of rooms.

The rates start at just $70 when you book direct – that’s great value anywhere in the world and even included free breakfast here. For $20 more you can add a lunch or dinner and a drinks package which includes wine and beer. If you are really hungry and thirsty then this is the way to go!

I found the food just OK. There are some good quality items to be found for breakfast, but the pizza I ordered for $8 (as I did not add the all-inclusive package) wasn’t exactly blessed with much taste.

The grounds are well-kept and there seems to be an endless parade of security staff. On many occasions you will see more security than guests walking everywhere. Now this is great news, given how dangerous Mombasa is, but it’s still annoying!

The Lookout Bar and the Swahili Lounge became my favorite spots – a warm ocean breeze and a fantastic view across the water. The resort is quiet (unless the annoying ‘animation’ runs in the morning and in the main restaurant area between 9pm and 11pm). Unless you like that sort of entertainment, request a room all the way in the back that gets less noise.

The resort offers certain water sports options like surfing and kayaking against a small fee.

The beach itself is always being pounded by street sellers, camel ride sellers and people with everything under the sun you never wanted to buy. You can’t really stay there.

The hotel rooms were just OK as well. The rooms can best be described as rustic but in good condition. The AC worked like a charm, though – quiet and effective. The bathroom in my (lowest category) room was barely working with minimal shower pressure and a toilet flush that was just about ready to give up.

Most of the guests were either Nairobian or European package tourists attracted by the great value and the sun. It seemed the resort wasn’t full – likely only half of the rooms were taken.

There is no reason to go out of your way to come to Mombasa, but if you are in town give this hotel a try. It’s ranked number one on TripAdvisor. It’s great value and the gardens, pools and beach make for a relaxing time.
