Radisson Blu Istanbul Airport Review

During my time in Istanbul, Turkey in the summer of 2015, I stayed at the Radisson Blu Istanbul Ortakoy and the Radisson Blu Asia Istanbul on the Asian side. Now the Radisson Blu near the airport was missing on my list!

The hotel operates a complimentary airport shuttle and the drive is just 5 minutes, but it only runs once an hour! The times are listed but I would not put too much faith into them. I waited for just about 20 minutes. As an alternative you can likely talk a driver into a EUR 5 drive or just get an Uber.

Check-in was crowded (as you would expect at an airport hotel, where most rooms are just rented out for a night). The agent was super-friendly and knew about Club Carlson Gold status. He upgraded me to a business class room, which are better equipped and usually a bit larger. There is also a VIP amenity for Gold members – sadly no free breakfast, though.

The first room I was given had a window directly onto the freeway, and while the room was noise-insulated, it was still audible. I requested a new room and it was facing one of the two huge courtyards. One courtyard has a decorative water pool and the other has a pretty zen garden. These interior rooms are super-quiet as the building itself is shielded well from the noise (it is right behind the runway and borders the main Istanbul freeway).

Both rooms were huge – you can easily have 5 people sleep in these rooms, even if there is only one bed. There was a Nespresso coffee maker and free water. I also later received lots of fruit as my ‘VIP amenity’.

The internet was trouble and would always disconnect me, but when it worked it was fast, though. This hotel uses a different provider and not the one that most Radisson hotels use (that I love and makes for a great internet experience).

The bathrooms in both rooms were huge, the shower pressure was high and there was warm water aplenty.

I missed the airport shuttle at 10AM, so had to wait a full hour before the next shuttle. The round-trip takes just about 30 minutes, but for some reason management decided to not run the shuttle more often, which is a bad idea for an airport hotel. No airport hotel at LAX would get away with it.

I paid just $80 plus tax for the night and had a good time at the hotel. I wish the shuttle would go more often, but the rooms are world class and huge. Be selective with your room, though and keep testing other rooms if you do not like what was initially assigned to you.
