In the Mayan language, Akumal means ‘place of the turtle’. Part of the Riviera Maya area, this beautiful town was officially founded in 1958 as a community for scuba divers and is a popular destination due to its gorgeous beaches and its endangered green sea turtles. You can either snorkel or dive here yourself or join a tour. If you choose to do it yourself, check out this great guide, which shows you how to do it for free – if you have your own snorkel, that’s all you’ll need.
