What’s the scoop with Uber and Lyft?
Los Angeles is now the largest US city to allow rideshare services like Uber and Lyft to fully operate alongside taxis for pickups as well as drop-offs at LAX Airport. Within the next few weeks, passengers arriving at LAX will be able to ride home via a rideshare service, whereas until now they have only been permitted to be dropped off at the airport.
The LA City Council voted to allow the change without requiring the companies to fingerprint their drivers as expected. Los Angeles taxi drivers are fingerprinted and checked against FBI criminal databases, but Uber and Lyft representatives argued during the City Hall debate that their background checks are just as thorough. However, it was recently found that at least 25 current Uber drivers had serious criminal records, for crimes that include assault, driving under the influence and even murder.
