I admit I had never stayed in an AC Hotel before – I was curious to try out this part of the Marriott chain.
Algeciras is located just a few miles west of Gibraltar and is a major port town with lots of ferry departure to Marocco (and the Spanish enclaves in Africa). It’s not a pretty town for sure but a major industrial center.
The AC Hotel Algeciras is located on a busy intersection (at least at 2 AM at night it was VERY busy) and there is no driveway – the lobby entrance faces the busy roundabout. The Mercure hotel is located in the same building and has a driveway that you expect from a hotel. Odd – but seemingly a normal thing with an AC hotel.
I parked my car in a no-stopping zone (this is Spain after all and traffic rules aren’t exactly closely followed here). The check-in agent explained the free parking in a nearby garage for me. It’s close enough but not easy to get in there in a car given the amount of locals finding parking at the same time (it’s also a public garage on the non-reserved posts).
The check-in agent mentioned that a major Spanish rock band had just checked into the hotel and those were spectators hoping to see the celebrities. Oh well.
I found the room to be pretty nice with a quirky wash basin. I liked the dark colors and the modern furnishings.
The WiFi would not really have any bandwidth left by the morning. This might have been a temporary thing.
In summary this is a great place for a one night stay before you head to the ferry or onto Gibraltar (which is much more expensive than Southern Spain). It’s not a great place for a longer stay though.
