What’s American Express Small Business Saturday?

American Express Small Business Saturday is an annual holiday shopping tradition where consumers are encouraged to shop at small businesses.

We posted about it before, in time for Small Business Saturday 2014. The event is usually held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so this year it’s likely to be held on November 28th.

Small businesses are inspired by and helped by American Express to attract more customers year-round, not just on Small Business Saturday, and customers are encouraged to Shop Small and spread the word.

How can I get involved with American Express Small Business Saturday?

You can involve your own small business or you can get involved as a customer – or even both.

Small business involvement:

You can create free, personalized marketing materials like printable signage to display at your business or, if your business accepts American Express cards, you can add your business to the Shop Small Map so that people can find you. To help promote your website, you can download a digital banner and add Shop Small logos and infographic.

To get inspiration, take a look at some of the success stories on the site, such as Little Man Ice Cream in Denver:

Customer involvement:

As a consumer, you can help small businesses simply by shopping with them year-round or even just on Small Business Saturday every year. You can also help promote the idea by sharing where you shop on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook as well as using social media to ‘promise to #ShopSmall’.

You can also sign up to be a Neighborhood Champion. Neighborhood Champions are business associations, state and local chambers of commerce and other community organizers who commit to organizing events or activities to rally their neighborhoods for Small Business Saturday. In 2014, nearly 3,000 people helped to rally their communities to Shop Small by holding block parties, street fairs, concerts and much more.

Do I need to be an American Express customer or does my business need to accept American Express cards?

Surprisingly, no.

As a customer, you just pay for the goods as you normally would.

As a business, you can get involved and personalize marketing materials even if you don’t accept American Express cards. However, as a qualifying American Express card-accepting small merchant, you do get more perks, such as free online advertisements throughout the year and the ability to add yourself to the map.
