United Awards sweet spot – South America and Caribbean to Mexico

Posted on April 9, 2015 by in United Mileage Plus

United MileagePlus suffered a massive devaluation last year. However, a number of areas are still great value.

One option that seems fascinating is an award WITHIN or BETWEEN these regions:

– Caribbean
– Central America
– Mexico
– Northern South America

Awards within or between these regions are priced at 10,000 one-way or 20,000 round-trip (plus you get one free stopover with a United MileagePlus round-trip award).

You are not usually allowed to touch United States soil with any of the routings, but otherwise there are few restrictions.

United partners with Aeromar, which is not part of Star Alliance, but is fully searchable on United.com. Aeromar flies as far north as Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, which is just across the border from Texas.

The nearest US airport is Laredo, which is 100 miles away, so it may not make sense to fly there just to save miles; for many Texas residents it may make sense to drive down there instead.

If you are already in the Caribbean (e.g. from using Avios from Miami or with a paid fare), this is a great tool to use to see more of the regions for minimal cost.

Here are a number of ideas of what you can do with this award chart gem.
