Don’t forget – (Re)select your airline for the American Express Platinum in January

Posted on January 5, 2015 by in Best use American Express Membership Rewards

The American Express Platinum card comes with a $200 airline fee reimbursement that you can use per calendar year.

American Express requires you to choose one of the following airlines:

– Delta Airlines
– American Airlines
– Alaska Airlines
– US Airways
– United Airlines
– Southwest
– JetBlue

You will get the most value from this when using the American Express card for airline gift cards (which you can use for future tickets) or use the card for taxes and fees for award tickets.

This worked well for me in the last couple of years with United gift cards. However, award tickets are processed as Continental Airlines when booked online (since the current United websites came from the Continental merger, so award taxes and fees do not trigger a credit).

Now there are reports of UNITED gift cards not being reimbursed by American Express on the statement.

You can look up user reports here – what currently works and what doesn't.

The good news? Every January you can switch your airline preferences and get reimbursement again. I just switched to American Airlines from United and bought a $50 gift card from American Airlines – this just got credited back. Thanks Amex!
