Just $421 – cheap flights to Moscow from New York/ Los Angeles and how to take advantage of the Russian Rouble crisis
The Russian crisis and the rouble crisis is hitting demand for routes to Russia hard. We have featured several deals to Moscow from various US destinations such as sub-$500 for the return trip, but now there is a new trick.
Update seat31b.com points me to Russian OTA anywayanyday which can book any flight with a 20% discount (i.e. inside the US) due to the falling Ruble exchange rate. Keep in mind this is a little risky since it's not exactly clear where the ruble will stand once the charge kits your credit card account.
What's the trick with the Russian Roubles pricing?
Airlines uses different systems to file fares in different currencies. Some airline fares are files on a fixed currency price, and some fluctuate based on a daily rate.
The Russian rouble (and some other currencies) have dramatically lost in value against the dollar and the change is not yet reflected in prices.
ITA Matrix allows you to set a different 'point-of-sale' and a currency of your choosing.
Flights to Moscow from Los Angeles on Aeroflot come out at around $600 in April (less in the months before, but Russia in winter isn't as much fun, but is cheaper).
You don't have to depart from Russia for these fares, but the savings might be the most substantial. You don't even need to go to Russia – you can just transit through Russia.
These prices are 10% less than what you see on Kayak.com.
Now to book these fares, you need to find a Russian OTA or go directly to the Russian airline – in this case, Aeroflot.ru. Make sure you select Russian roubles as the currency and check with Google or xe.com how much are you paying in roubles. Then use a credit card with no foreign exchange fees.
