Where are the Maldives?

When asking the question, "Where are the Maldives?" it can be difficult to not reply that they are surely located in heaven. These gorgeous scattered isles are a slice of heavenly paradise that need to be seen to be believed.

But where are the Maldives – really?

The Republic of Maldives is an archipelago of 1,190 islands found in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka and India. The Maldives lie across two rows of atolls that are spread across 90,000km square of mainly ocean, with around 200 inhabited islands, another 90 developed for tourism and others used for agriculture and suchlike or simply left natural.

What makes the Maldives so unique?

The marvel of the Maldives is that amid the idyllic atolls is this string of islands, each with a coral reef circling its lagoon. The atolls are formed on a sharp ridge, making the place secluded and protected from the open seas. Clear, deep blue seas, turquoise reefs teeming with life and glorious, white sandy beaches are everywhere you turn.

What can I do in the Maldives?

99% of the Maldives is the stunning crystal-clear sea, which provides most of the Republic's fun – swimming, diving, snorkeling, water polo and surfing are all in abundance. Playing in the sea is an absolute must while you're there, but the islands also provide so much more:

– Take a day trip to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, where you can swim with manta rays

– Try a 45-minute ride on the Whale Submarine, which dives to a depth of around 35m

– Dine at the world's first all-glass underwater restaurant, Ithaa, which is 5m below sea level!

– Spend the evening night-fishing on the reef with local fishermen

– Barbecue the fish that you caught night-fishing on a deserted isle

– Check out the Eco Center on Kuramathi Island

– Take an excursion to an inhabited island to see local life

– Stay in a luxury island resort or visit a spa to be pampered while you relax

– Enjoy night-time stingray-feeding and shark-watching

Never mind asking the question, "Where are the Maldives" right now, when you can instead ask, "Why aren't I there yet?!"
