Dubai is a 'hot' hotel market and IHG has almost a dozen properties in the Dubai area. The Holiday Inn Bur Dubai (Embassy District) is close to the heart of old Dubai, just across the Dubai Creek from Deira. It's also just 2 minutes walk from the BurJuman Metro Station and the BurJuman Mall that has lots of retail, food and groceries.

The hotel fetches great reviews and I was curious how it would work out for me. I used 20,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night. Regular rates were about $250 for my stay. Like other (older) hotel buildings in Dubai, the architecture isn't something to marvel at. Buildings are made to shield yourself from the heat, not to look pretty – and so the Holiday Inn looks decisively nondescript.

This changes though, once you step inside – there is a nicely-built lobby and a very beautiful atrium for the restaurant there to greet you.

The staff almost fell over each other to check me in. I had a very friendly check-in and I was upgraded to an Executive Suite as IHG Platinum without asking. I also received a Welcome Amenity with fruit, desserts and a bottle of red wine. A good red wine in Dubai is as rare as gold (probably even more rare). That was easily the best Welcome Amenity since The Sheraton at the Iguazu Falls in Argentina.

The suite was one of the best Holiday Inn upgrades I ever had – very spacious, beautifully decorated with lots of useful furniture (but not too much). The bed was huge and the linen of great quality. The room was in a quiet corner of the building, but also located directly under the swimming pool (which is located on the 4th floor).

The pool is pretty decent for a downtown hotel and offers some views. The water was freezing, though (Dubai gets cold at night during winter). The gym was of good size and had the usual selection of cardio machines and some lifting equipment.

I did have trouble getting the hot water to work, which is apparently a common issue on the 3rd floor of this hotel. Engineering came by a couple of times to fix it and did succeed at some point.

I liked the hotel place so much that I booked another stay right away (as I'd have another day in Dubai). The next stay, I got in at 5AM from the airport and the staff had no qualms checking me in right away into my room. Awesome service!
