How to use travel hacking to get a domestic flight for just 2,500 miles

Posted on October 1, 2014 by in American Airlines AAdvantage, United Mileage Plus

Last year, we featured a way to get a domestic flight for free by signing-up for JetAirways JetPrivilege.

Amazingly enough, the redemption rates at JetPrivilege haven't changed since then!

Read on and you will learn how to take advantage of the cheapest way to fly domestically using miles.

What's the deal with JetAirways JetPrivilege?

JetAirways, which is based in India, has been building its international network for some time. It partners with a host of airlines including these US airlines:

– United
– US Airways
– American Airlines

It has an award chart that is pretty confusing for partner redemptions and the miles required are mighty high.

However, something interesting is going on in the Northeastern America zone – redemptions between airports under 1,000 miles (that are non-stop) cost just 2,500 miles one-way in economy.

I have confirmed these redemption rates for Chicago to Montreal and Chicago to Toronto with an agent on the phone.

I assume most airport combinations in the Northeastern US and Canada under 1,000 miles in distance qualify for this award rate.

How to earn JetAirways JetPrivilege miles?

So how do we get these miles? The option to earn 2,500 miles just by signing up has expired, but JetPrivilege just became a Starwood partner and miles can now be transferred from Starpoints on a 1:1 basis. While I'm very selective about transferring Starpoints, this transfer can replace a 12,500 miles redemption with United or a cash ticket of $400+ so it's certainly great value!

JetPrivilege requires you to accumulate 3,500 JPMiles and have 2 activities on Jet Airways, JetKonnect or program partners. I'd be willing to bet that the Starwood transfer counts as one activity, so you would need one more such as a car rental or another hotel stay.

It might be enough if you send the transfer from Starwood in two batches (so it shows up as two partner activities).

There is no minimum Starpoint transfer requirement for Platinum members with most airlines. Gold members have a minimum transfer requirement of 1,500 Starpoints and Preferred members have a minimum transfer requirement of 2,500 Starpoints.

How does JetAirways JetPrivilege redemption work?

This is the weak part of the deal. You will first need to accumulate the 3,500 miles and then 14 days before travel, send an email to the redemption team. There is currently no online or phone booking option for partner redemptions 🙁

Email the details of the flight you'd like to book (flight number, class of service, passengers and dates) and the redemption team should get back to you within 3 business days. You can look up award availability using ba.com (for US Airways or American Airlines) and united.com for United flights.
