Westin Punta Cana Hotel Review

Though I did not stay overnight at the Westin, I spent several days in this beautiful resort. Once you enter it feels much more like Hawaii and less than some of the beaten-up parts of the Dominican Republic. It recently opened in January 2014 and it's just beautiful!

The beach is so famous that lots of day trippers come to the area to enjoy it.

Rates for the hotel hover around $200 per night or 10,000 Starpoints. That is a lot in a country where many good all-inclusive resorts charge just $150 a night. The Westin doesn't offer all-inclusive deals though.

Given the low category of the Four Points in Punta Cana and the free access to the Westin, this combination offered enormous value.

The beach is white powder with blue water. The outlying reef protects it from high waves. The pools are enormous and there is even a hot tub (though the temperature differs little from the main pool).

The landscaping is beautiful and is as good as it gets anywhere in the world. The staff are friendly and the drinks service at the pool and beach are both perfect. I also ate there a number of times and while the food is somewhat bland and expensive it is much better than what you get in a 15-mile radius. Given the outrageous taxi prices in the area it's a good idea to stay in the hotel and pay up.

The hotel is just a short ride from Punta Cana Airport. It offers a wonderful weekend escape away from it all for a couple of days. However there isn't much to do besides hanging out at the beach, enjoying the surroundings. Also the food selection gets pretty old rather quickly.

If you find cheap flights to PUJ and want a great beach experience I'd certainly recommend it – I wouldn't hesitate to come back!
