During my last stay in Kiev I tried out the Fairmont Kyiv and the Intercontinental Kyiv. I also investigated the Hyatt Regency Kiev. The Hyatt and the Intercontinental have a fantastic location next to Kiev sights. The Fairmont is a bit further off but there is ample public transport to make up for that. The only disadvantage with the Hyatt and Intercontinental is that most reasonable or good restaurants are 10-15 minutes' walk away.

This time I wanted to try out something else and stumbled upon the well-reviewed Senator Apartments. Rates were under $100 and the location is right at Kiev's Old Square (now Maidan). It's also the location of the demonstration of recent months and the reminders are still very much present.

The building is just 100 years behind the square, so location-wise it it does not get much better. Check-in was very friendly in fluent English. I was upgraded to a superior apartment.

My apartment was actually a studio – just one room – but it all seemed brand new and it was huge indeed. Few suites I ever stayed in have been so large. The bathroom had a rain shower with great water pressure – all very modern.

The WiFi was about 20 Mbit (which seems to be the speed to beat in most of Kiev) and worked all the time very well.

The hotel features a self-service laundry on the second floor with modern washer/dryer combinations.

Breakfast clocks in at $7 if you prefer to order it in (I went to one of the many good bakeries around town myself).

The only disadvantage was the antique key system – no key cards but rather old-school, bulky keys were handed out. This did not fit the modern ambiance at all. Plus these needed to be left at the reception when going outside.

Besides that one flaw, this was a great stay. Less than $100 compares well to the $250+ rates at brand-name hotels. The room quality was very high and is on a par with the Intercontinental Kiev (my apartment was easily 3x the size of my superior room there). I'd be happy to go back to Senator Apartments!
