Daily Getaways announced for 2014 – Best Offers explained Part I (Hertz, Choice, Hilton, IHG)

The American Express and US Travel Association's Daily Getaways has been a fantastic source of cheap miles in the last couple of years.

The new 2014 Getaways have just been announced, so here are the best offers from the first two weeks of this year's edition.

1) $280 for a one-week rental at Hertz (extra 10% off if purchased with an AMEX card)

This offer will run from May 20th, at 1:00 PM ET. You are buying 5,500 Hertz Rewards Points.

Hertz offers Saver Awards and Anytime Awards.

For the 5,500 points you can get 2 weeks of rentals outside the high season! So that's just $140 for a one-week rental up to a premium vehicle.

Certain Hertz locations like Hawaii get really busy and pretty expensive. With the Daily Getaway points you can get a full-size car for $280 instead of paying $340+ for a standard car.

We consider this a good deal!

2) 40,000 Choice Points for $165 (extra 10% off if purchased with an AMEX card)

This sale will be available on May 21st, at 1:00 PM ET.

Choice used to have a good award chart and offered cheap redemptions (~8,000) in Paris off-season.

40,000 points that sell for $165 could in the past get you 5 nights in Paris! However, Choice Hotels changed its award chart for many European hotels last year and most hotels jumped to 25,000 points per night in Paris.

There is still a pretty long list of hotels that are available for 8,000 points including:

Comfort Inn Osaka for 8,000 points or $33/night (regular $79)

Comfort Inn Tokyo for 8,000 points or $33/night (regular $100)

Quality Hotel Prince Philip, Stockholm for 6,000 points or $25/night (regular $199)

If you have a location in mind with hotels on the 6,000 or 8,000 redemption level this can be excellent value.

3) 100,000 Hilton HHonors Points for $550 (extra 10% off if purchased with an AMEX card)

Available: May 23rd, at 1:00 PM ET

Hilton used to have an excellent award chart but it was severely damaged last year.

Many top-end properties now charge 90,000 points per night. While this could still be called a discount for a night at the Conrad Rangali Islands in the Maldives I would actually consider it a great deal.

There are a few noteworthy properties in the Hilton award chart's lower categories:

Category 1

Category 2

Category 3

The Doubletree Kuala Lumpur can be had for 10,000 points, bringing the effective rate for 10 nights to just $55. This is a 50% discount against normal rates. A similar deal can be had with the Doubletree Beijing.

This can be a good deal, but it's nothing to be too excited about if you don't yet have specific stays in mind.

4) 100,000 IHG Rewards Points for $630 (extra 10% off if purchased with an AMEX card)

Available: May 26th, at 1:00 PM ET

The keyword here is PointsBreaks – $630 can buy you 20 nights in a posh Intercontinental somewhere in the world. This is great value – no doubt! However, bear in mind that Pointbreaks promotions sell out quickly and the hotel selection favors off-season and hotels with low occupancy.

There aren't usually many IHG Rewards Club redemptions with good value.

You can 'buy' IHG rewards points at 5,000 increments for $35 so the additional discount isn't much of a value to me.
