All About Reconsideration Numbers

Reconsideration lines are a valuable resource because they not only save you time but increase your chances of earning valuable sign-up bonuses for opening new credit cards.

In the past several years I've applied and been approved for nearly 80 different credit card products. In that time, I've only been denied once. I'm not saying this to brag, but to note that there is a great potential tool in every travel hacker's bag that you can use to help ensure approvals and speed up the pesky '30 day process' that you encounter. These tools are called reconsideration lines.

Essentially, you circumvent the whole process of waiting for your approval to transpire at the bank's sweet time by being proactive and promoting a faster response. In the vast majority of cases, you can get on the phone with a credit analyst, explain your situation and most always get an immediate approval there and then. Here are a few tips to getting this done:

1. Don't call us, we'll call you: The first rule is not to wait for their response, but to call the banks directly. Once you get someone on the line, explain that you applied for a card and wanted to see if they needed any other information for them to approve your application.

2. Give good reasons: The credit analysts are always going to ask you certain questions, such as confirmation of your annual income, your personal info like your address, social security number and so forth. However, sometimes they'll ask you questions such as, "Why do you apply for so many cards?" or something along that vein. This is doubly the case if you sign up for a lot of cards. Although the most accurate answer to this question would be because of the generous sign-up bonus, that's probably not the best answer to give the rep. Instead, detail how you've shifted your travel plans to include the miles/points that the particular card offers. It's never a bad idea to also reference that you like the credit card company (e.g. "I love American Express!") and that you've been a long-time customer with them.

3. Be polite and cheerful: Phone customer service representatives don't have an easy job as they are often the verbal punching bag of callers. I've found that it's always very helpful to greet them by name, ask them how they're doing and generally treat them in a friendly manner. On more than one occasion, I've been able to charm the representative into looking into alternate methods of accepting my application instead of giving me an outright rejection. In those cases, I usually suggest allocating some of the credit line on another card to the new card so as to avoid any further credit risk on the issuer's part.
