The United airlines devaluation hit all of us hard. However the United award chart still has some sweet spots that won't go away.
Check out the following route – that is more than 11,000 flown on South African Airways and Ethiopian Airlines spawning most of the continent and the pretty islands in the Indian Ocean.
This currently prices out as 25,000 in Economy and 50,000 in Business Class. Availability is generally good in Economy while the JNB-MRU leg is often just available in Business.
The new award chart will 'only' change this to 37,500 in Economy and 60,000 in Business.
While the times of 120,000 miles Round Trip in Business Class to Southern Africa seem numbered there are still some good options:
– Delta Skymiles 140,000 miles
– Alaska Airlines (with Cathay Pacific) 140,000 miles in First Class
While AAdvantage offers North America to Southern Africa for 150,000 the routing rules do not allow a connection in the Middle East. The only valid connection is Europe which makes you liable to British Airways enormous fuel surcharges.
