Much like my primer on the merits of the US Airways Master Card, the Lufthansa Miles and More card is another great product from Barclays.
Currently, they’re offering a 35,000 mile signup bonus if you spend $5,000 within the first three months. In this article, I’ll detail what I think is one of the best uses for these miles.
Miles and More has a very interesting award chart that prices US domestic business class at 35,000 miles roundtrip in the Continental United States. In an interesting display of Teutonic generosity, one ways for all flights are actually charged at a lower price than the roundtrip. In this case, it’d be 17,000 miles each way instead of 17,500 miles. While not earth shattering, it’s always nice to be able to save miles when you can. This is especially true as the US legacy carriers all charge 50,000 miles to fly in business.
These PS flights routinely retail for over $4,000. Granted, most people – including your humble author – wouldn’t dream of dropping 4 G’s on a six hour domestic flight. However, I definitely think there is a sizable premium warranted for a 180 degree lie flat bed over $400 economy seating, especially on a redeye flight from LAX to JFK. While that premium differs from person to person, $5 and 34,000 Lufthansa miles is a smoking deal in my book.
There are other great ways to leverage the Lufthansa Miles and More credit card, but they usually involve high fuel surcharges if flying on Lufthansa or other partners. The 17,000 one way in lie flat business class seats is the top of the pops in my book for these miles. If you live in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles, there really isn’t a reason that you shouldn’t sign up for this card and take advantage of this great deal.
