How to get to the Maldives using AAdvantage Miles (using OneWorld partners)

Lucky has a great post dissecting the options to use American Airlines miles to get to the Maldives. This is especially timely given Qatar airlines entrance into Oneworld today.

The awards to the Maldives can be tricky since American Airlines requires the 'over-water carrier' to publish a fare between the point of origination and the destination. Now Etihad and Qatar are a great choice since they have an excellent First (Etihad)/ Business class product and awards to the Maldives can be booked as one award and not two using AAdvantage miles.

Etihad generally has fewer fares from US cities published – currently only a number of East Coast US destinations have a fare published. Thanks lucky for pointing out the double fare.

He also points out the distance based award that allows you to travel up to 20,000 miles in business class for just 135,000 miles. This award also allows you to stop in each city along the way.

Malaysia Airlines, British Airways and Cathay Pacific also operate service to MLE but it requires two awards per AA's antique rules or incurs heavy fuel surcharges (British Airways).
