United Mileage Plus has a promotion (registration required) going on that gives you 25% more miles when converting hotel points to miles.
Usually converting hotel points to miles is not such a great idea. You loose a lot in the conversion. 25% does not change the equation too much.
You can now start converting your points into miles and earn 25% bonus miles on all transfers of 5,000 miles or more through November 30, 2013. Make the most out of your unused points, and start thinking about your next award ticket.
One thing that caught my eye is the conversion of large amounts of Marriott Rewards points to miles:
Convert points into miles: With RewardsPlus, all MileagePlus members can convert Marriott Rewards points into award miles at a 20% discount compared to other airline partners. The following conversion rates apply:
8,000 points to 2,000 miles
16,000 points to 5,000 miles
24,000 points to 10,000 miles
56,000 points to 25,000 miles
112,000 points to 50,000 miles
If I understand the page correctly it gives the standard conversion rate before the 25% bonus. 112,000 Marriott Rewards points give 3 nights in a rather nice category 7 hotel.
However with the bonus it will be 62,500 United Mileage Plus. This is the mileage required for a business class one-way from Asia to the United States which sells for about $2,500 – $3,000. I do not have too many MR points but I'd consider converting them now.
I will use it to convert some Wyndham Rewards points that still linger in my account and a smallish Marriott point balance.
Don't transfer Starwood points to United – the conversion rate of 2:1 just makes no sense when you can transfer to many other partners on a 1:1 level.
