Delta raising the prices of low-level business class redemptions starting June 1st 2014

This is maybe no surprise – Delta Skymiles is increasing the miles needed for business class trips at the low level.

Some of the mileage increases are as follows:

Business class between the US and Europe goes from 100,000 SkyMiles to 125,000 SkyMiles
Business class between the US and South America goes from 100,000 SkyMiles to 125,000 SkyMiles
Business class between the US and Asia goes from 120,000 SkyMiles to 140,000 SkyMiles
Business class between the US and Middle East/Africa goes from 120,000 SkyMiles to 140,000 SkyMiles
Business class between the US and Australia goes from 150,000 SkyMiles to 160,000 SkyMiles.

The change is effective for travel after June 1st (not bookings made) so there is no need to rush bookings right now.

It was expected that Delta Skymiles will go 'revenue-based' this year meaning that miles would get a fixed value. This would be similar to the system Southwest uses. This hasn't happened so far and the mileage increase is a sign that Delta is committed for the time being to the fixed mileage needed for tickets. Let's hope it stays that way!
