Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe, Dresden Hotel

Introduction

Dresden old town is chock-full of hotels. Within 5 minutes walking distance you'll find the Swissotel, the Hilton, the Steigenberger, the Kempinski and a number of non-chain hotels.

The Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe is a new hotel directly opposite the Frauenkirche and it's very affordable during it's sale on Expedia. So I needed to try it!

Location (Sightseeing, Airport, Business)

Dresden airport is about 10 minutes by cab. The main train station is about a 5 minute cab ride away. There isn't much business around though Dresden is a small, easy to navigate town so it's easy to drive out from here.

The place just in front of the church is beautifully restored and the location is great for sightseeing.

Check-In (Friendliness, Efficiency)

Check-In was quick and easy and done with a smile!

Wifi is a hefty EUR 14.50. Parking is EUR 24 per night.

Steigenberger has a loyalty program called 'Award World'. It provides a good summary of benefits for Prestige and Elite card holders. Prestige card holders report back happily about upgrades and service improvements.

However it's based on spend! EUR 2,500 for the Prestige and EUR 10,000 for the Elite level. However there are reports that the Prestige level can be bought for EUR 50 for a year. However I could not find a download link for the form.

The lobby is small and it's very 'boring'. Certainly no comparison to the nearby Swissotel which is really funky!

The spa was closed for repair work at the time of my stay. Guests were able to use the extensive Spa at the Hilton instead.

Rooms (Cleanliness, Space provided)

Rooms struck me as very efficient and 'boring'. Rooms were large enough and very functional. There was the right amount of furniture but boy it was like sleeping in an office building.

Sleeping (Mattress, Comfort level, Noise)

While the beds/ mattress seemed new they were on the soft side for my taste. The room was extremely quiet with or without an pen window.

Since Dresden was in the middle of a heat wave that day I appreciated the quiet and well working AC a lot.

Mighty's Take

The hotel is an ok choice for a sightseeing stay in Dresden. There's tons of competition around. I personally like the Hilton and Swissotel (which is also very new) more. The Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe lacks in personality but makes up in room quality and staff friendliness.
