This flight leaves at the ungodly hour of 1 AM. So after a full day in Hong Kong and several hours at the (very good) lounge you really, really look forward to board this plane and just close your eyes/
Cathay Pacific has several planes to Europe and a bunch to the US departing just after midnight which keeps occupancy levels at the lounge pretty high (though it is not unpleasant).
Boarding and taxiing was uneventful and we took off on time – yeah! It’s always interesting to see how different those flight times are in trans-pacific flights – the outbound was 15 hours and the inbound is just 11 hours – makes sense with 100-120mph wind in your face or not.
Similar to the outbound a number of flyers stayed up and were looking forward to the ‘dinner service’ starting at about 2 AM local time.
Flight attendants did their utmost to bring out the amenity kits and dinner trays and salads as soon as possible.
Similar to the outbound flight I again had to ‘fight’ for my entree as flight attendants forgot serving me on several occasions. Maybe it was the VIP in the next seat next to to me but I was ignored unless I raised my hand or pressed the call button. Everyone was very apologetic but it happened again and again. Very odd.
The Grilled beef was quite good – though not crazily so. But it was nicely complemented by the Chateau Hanteillan French red wine.
The cheese dessert was fine – though the cheese was a bit bland.
The seat is quite fantastic and really gives you an enormous amount of privacy and control over your seating position.
After a solid 7 hours of napping it was time for breakfast. Now I do not eat eggs and try to avoid carbohydrates as well as dairy options (yes the 4-Hour-Body Diet). This does not leave much wiggle room for breakfast. Alas the breakfast cart passed by me but no food was really offered to me – had to call it up again.
I loved the smoothies they had packed and I did have a yoghurt which was great. Coffee was good too. Too bad and I can not really comment on the other breakfast items.
I landed 30 minutes early and I washeaded for an empty(!) immigrations hall in SFO.
So would I take a Cathay Trans-Pacific again? Absolutely! I love the ‘hard product’ – it’s just a great seat to sit and sleep on. If you are bored the IFE will keep you busy. If you are looking for a gourmet meal it’s borderline disappointing.
