I do get a lot of questions about which places I would recommend for certain types of activities. We recently started a series for Digital Nomads, but I soon felt we needed to expand on that to:

Call me a romantic, but if I think of a honeymoon it must be on an island - pretty beaches and lots of calm, warm winds. Cities just aren't as romantic, even if the locals speak Italian :)

Maldives

The Maldives are just picture-perfect - lots of tiny little islands (that usually each feature just one hotel or a local village) in the Indian Ocean. While it is rather easy and cheap to get to Male city, it can be expensive to get to a resort and you can't easily leave. Now some may see this as a positive...

Tahiti

Tahiti is also picture-perfect; it's just like someone took an idea of paradise and developed a real world theme park. I hope in a future world this is what everywhere looks like. While the islands are usually bigger here, they are mostly sparsely populated and you are at the mercy of your resort for anything you want to do (most are excellent, though, like the InterContinental Moorea and the InterContinental Le Moana Bora Bora).

Mauritius

Mauritius is a somewhat bigger Indian Ocean island that is an interesting mix of South Indian, African and French culture. There is also a real city besides all the resorts. Mauritius has gotten quite a bit cheaper the last few years despite the multiple A380's that Emirates sends there every day.

Seychelles

Another honeymoon favorite that lacks in island culture but makes up for it in sheer beauty. There's a number of islands outside of the main island that are more like the Maldives - very private and reclusive (and expensive!)

Zanzibar

Zanzibar has a great vibe to it (something that is tough to find in the rather dangerous Tanzanian mainland) and the old town of Stone Town is just an hour from the beautiful beaches. It's a great destination that isn't too expensive.

Paradise Island near Davao

Paradise Island is a rather big island right off the coast off Davao in the Philippines. There is a local population (though there is little real infrastructure) and a small number of resorts. The whole place is just starting out, but it has beautiful jungly hills and crystal clear water. This is certainly more of an off-the-beaten-path option.

Hawaii

For anyone who lived in California for a while, Hawaii lacks anything exotic. However, most islands are set up well for a honeymoon, with plenty of hotels (many of them creaking, though) and a wonderful amount of stunning beaches.

Fiji

Fiji was not as pretty as I expected, but when you leave the capital and head for Yasawa Island it quickly becomes magical. It's often more low-key accommodation here, but it can be much more authentic.

Bali

Bali is a vacation paradise, with itstropical climate and beaches, as well as the world's most friendly people. Active honeymooners have so much to do and see here or if you prefer a lazy time you can just relax on the beach. Bali is really hot and humid, but is a fantastic place to visit.

Santorini

Santorini offers dramatic views, stunning sunsets and fantastic beaches; what more could you want for your honeymoon?
